原文文本 - English英语 The old adage of the title has a parallel in the scientific world “all research leads to biomedical advances”. The fact that research in one discipline contributes to another is well understood by the scientific community. It is not, however, so clear to the public or to public policy-makers. Because public support for funding of biomedical research is strong, the scientific community could build a more effective case for public support of all science by articulating how research in other disciplines benefits biological medicine.
The time is ripe to improve public appreciation of science. A recent National Science Foundation survey suggested that Americans continue to support research expenditures. In addition, public opinion polls indicate that scientists and science leaders enjoy enviably high public esteems. Instead of lamenting the lack of public understanding of science, we can work to enhance public appreciation of scientific research by showing how investigations are many areas close-knit and contribute to biomedical advances. A crucial task is to convey to the public, in easily understood terms, the specific benefits and the overall good that result from research in all areas of science.
Take, for example, agricultural research. On the surface, it may appear to have made few significant contributions to biomedical advances, except those directly related to human nutrition. This view is incorrect, however. In the case of nutrition, the connections between agricultural and biomedical research are best exemplified by the vitamin discoveries. At the turn of the century, when the concept of vitamins had not yet surfaced and nutrition as a scientific discipline did not exist, it was in a department of agricultural chemistry that the first true demonstration of vitamins was made. Single-grain feeding experiments documented the roles of vitamins A and B. the essential role of some minerals (iron and copper) was shown later, and these discoveries provided the basis of modern human nutrition research.
Despite such direct links, however, it is the latest discoveries that have been made in agricultural research that reveal its true importance to biomedicine. Life-saving antibiotics such as streptomycin were discovered in soil microorganisms. The first embryo transplant was made in a dairy cow, and related research led to advances in the understanding of human reproduction.

Being two of the civilized nations with long histories in the world, China and Greece have been maintaining friendly an association of long standing despite of such a long distance apart. Since the official establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, especially, the cooperative relationship has been continuously developed, and the volume of trade between two countries was up to 2.283 billion US Dollars in 2006, a new high in the history. It is worthy of special mention that the Olympic Games has greatly shortened the distance between us since the 28th Olympic Games was successfully completed in Athens in 2004 and the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in 2008.
We know that Chaoyang District is not only the window to the outside but also the location at which Beijing CBD and the Olympic Forest Park are situated, with high area-internationalized level. Meanwhile, Mallus (玛鲁斯) is the place where the main stadium of Athens Olympic Games and the Greek head-offices of many World Top 500 are located; thus, there is a broad prospect of cooperation because of so many similarities between us.
With the theme of “Olympics, Environment and Development”, a series of commercial culture activities will be conducted during the 8th International Business Festival, which will provide a platform with great significance to enable us to understand Chaoyang comprehensively via business affairs. I believe that, with the participation in this Business Festival, the commercial cooperation between us will be more intensified for achievement of mutual win-win and co-development.

Certainly the poets believe in the cycle theory. There is a wonderful passage in Byron’s “Childe Harold” which, to do it justice, should be read from the preceding apostrophe to Metella’s Tower. There seems to be a cycle of panics and of times of prosperity. Anyone with a working knowledge of modern history could recite our panic dates—1837, 1857, 1866 (Overend-Gurney panic in London), 1873, 1884, 1893, 1907, if he might well hesitate to add the deflation year of 1920. Panics, at least, show a variable interval between them, from ten to fourteen years, with the intervals apparently tending to grow longer. In a subsequent chapter we shall analyze this cycle theory, to test its possible usefulness.

It was sentiment which first gave a kingly funeral, and a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey, to the Unknown Soldier who had saved the race. I spent those exalted two minutes at the Mansion House corner, in the city of London, in November, 1919.
