And the mind-body connection is a founding principle in many Eastern Traditions. “The science of mental healing goes back approximately 5,000 years in India,” says Dr. Deepak Chopro, an internist, endocrinologist and adjunct professor of physiology at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. “The whole concept, explained in Vedic Literature, was that the body was the projection of consciousness.”
Even Western physicians, with their mechanistic concept of the body, have long acknowledged the power of the mind to turn mere sugal pills into effective medicine. Until recently they’ve regarded the so-called placebo effect as a pitfall rather than a resource. But that’s changing rapidly. The idea that thinking well helps make you well is becoming a truism in American medicine, and mind-body clinics are now offering therapies for everything from headaches to cancer. Dr. Steven Locke, associate director of the Psychiatry Consultation Service at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital, calls the mind-body movement the “third revolution” in Western medicine – ranking it alongside the advent of surgery and the discovery of penicillin.
