A softswitch that allows carriers to retain their existing investments while extending their reach to additional users is by necessity a multi-protocol softswitch. This switch should be modular in its protocol implementation, so that as new protocols are added with the progress of technology, a simple software block for the new protocol is inserted during operation without disrupting the calls in progress or the billing for those calls.
