Adapter 是指挤压机加料斗下面第一段机筒。通常它的直径由大变小，物料通过机筒内的螺杆一挤，压力就升高，然后再进一步进入后面的机筒。因此它可称为变径段或过渡段。挤压机的机筒分为好几段，各段的温度、压力不同。
Die是指挤压机的模头，就是上面有很多小孔的园盘。就像绞肉机头上的模头一样。塑料从模头挤出，然后被模头的刀具切割成小颗粒。

后面那一段不能理解为 “a profile … is observed ...”。这个 “a profile” 是前面 "The temperature profile” 的同位语。 “that starts… ” 是 “a profile” 的定语从句。 “until … adapter and die” 是这个定语从句中的状语从句。
