I’ve very rarely worked at public places, before moving back to Lisbon in 2015 maybe in one or two occasions I finished a translation at the airport while waiting for my flight, but I prefer working in the quietness of my home surrounded by everything I need to work.

I work from home, but sometimes I wish I could go to work in an isolated place but with (safe!) Internet access.

I think the quality issues would be more pressing as you're liable to get distracted when working in a Starbucks, on the beach, or in a sauna/massage parlour... Why would anyone want to translate in a sauna is beyond me, but each to their own.

I never do anything related to banking/finances on a public network (eg. paying for something).
What's a public network? If you are a hotel guest and use their wi-fi, it's not the same as a city wi-fi or some café. But I generally avoid it, except in some urgent situations, eg. I was late for a train, am in a rush and need to buy a new ticket at the spot or something.
Phone plans covering many countries are also quite expensive, so I don't use them.

My friend who is an IT expert told me that if I used a public wi-fi, for my PC or phone it'd be as if I licked a public door knob (too many viruses and bacteria), so I got a little scared. But I never had a cyber incident due to using a public wi-fi.

It wouldn't occur to me to work in public places. I am either working (at home, with my own 250-Mbit/s connection, proper keyboard, two large screens and powerful computer directly connected to my router via Ethernet) or I am out and about and explicitly not working.

It might be a prejudice, but I'm suspicious about the professionalism of translators that work "everywhere". I'm experienced enough to know that translation isn't a child's game that can be done welll in any circumstances.

I use Internet in public places but I never work out in public places, first of all I need a good big keyboard when working and a desk. Just saw the title refers specifically to working in public places.
It reminds me of all of those commercials for desks, standing desks, PC peripherals, etc. when you can see a tidy, smiley person (usually a handsome young woman or man), showing us how they enjoy that new keyboard, or the standing desk etc. No tired looks after 8 hours of int... And the commercial might match someone with occasional sporadic use or doing some light unnecessary work.
This reminded me of a case I saw just a while ago. A guy is sitting in a café, in the outside sun terrace, which is literally almost on the street, and as I walk by, he is dictating a report/article (probably a journalist) either into a software or a dictaphone. Obviously he doesn't care everyone can "hear" his entire article, he just doesn't feel like typing. With journalists it may be also a matter of speed to report something/write an article as quickly as possible. ▲ Collapse

Whereas I love to work out in public places. Passers-by can't get enough of my bulging pecs and rippling eight-pack (six-packs are for wimps).
While, as you say, it wouldn't exactly be best practice to dictate confidential translations in a busy café, today I'd actually be more worried about boring someone to death with my 80 pages of sustainability disclosures. I'm hanging by a thread myself, and that's only because I keep thinking about the money.

I actually never work from public places but, if I had to go out of the office (for instance, to a rural accommodation) I would create a network with my phone so the connection is still private. This is something I did once or twice because I had to finish some remote work, but I try to avoid it as much as possible.
