I use Win2000 and would like to remove IE6 completely from my system. But when I select IE6 in "change or remove apllication", I have only the choice of repair or restore, no removing possible.
Is there a utility that does the job. I use Firefox, but sometimes IE gets started automatically, because it is there.

I am not quite sure, but IE is an inherent part of the operating system and is necessary for many applications to work, even when you set Firefox (which I use too, an excellent browser) as your default browser. So I am afraid that removing IE is not possible.

It was for sure possible for Win98, though a third party program was needed. I myself used it to remove IE completely and was quite happy without it. Unfortunately, I have no information concerning later Windows versions.

But what I did I made Firefox my default browser in the Firefox options and left the "defualt browser box" blank under my IE browser options. So, Firefox opens by default and my IE never opens by default, fortunately.

If you type that up, there is a host of solutions offered by a host of people - from MS itself to all kinds of strange magicians.
I am afraid it will require much eperimentation and trial and error.
For starters try removing all file asociations with IE, all toolbars etc. Make it as unobtrusive as possible.

As far as I know, without IE you will no longer be able to download MS updates and do your telebanking.

As for updates that is rather correct, especially that updating via browser requires ActiveX that are not supported by Firefox. As for telebanking, everything depends on the bank you use. In most cases it should cause no problems, but in my bank I had to install manually the plug-in responsible for signing the key.

I also use Firefox but there are still a large number of websites that don't support it (banks, streaming media etc). Of course, plug-ins and extensions are being written all the time, but i still have to use IE from time to time.

I use Opera which may be set to declare herself as IE, but this does not help. At many Polish sites, for example, I have to use IE as many functions simply do not work in other browsers, the text looks garbled, etc. The webmasters do not worry about the users who have browsers other than IE.

As Piotr said above, IE is part of the Operating system (OS). It is in fact what makes your desktop display. You can see this by opening the running process dialog in Windows and iexplorer is running even if you haven't opened a browser.
This was the big issue with the lawsuit against Microsoft about 5-7 years ago because it is "necessary" to have IE installed to run Windows.
If you remove it, you risk having all kinds of problems.
However, this does not require you to use IE. You can install another type of browser and use it. I have several types of browsers because of Java compatibility issues encountered from time to time.

IE is very tightly integrated into Windows, sharing a number of its primary components with Windows Explorer, which is the backbone of the Windows system. Microsoft does not give users the option to uninstall IE, and the attempt to simply delete its folders will cause your system to act erratically and/or inoperable.
