Intellectual History
Men carry their fate in their character, which they have not wholly made for themselves, for they bear the heavy weight of inheritance, a social as well as a physical inheritance. Yet men can face this face, this necessity, with courage and dignity, and win from the struggle honor and even a kind of peace. The good life is not an easy life, not a cheap life, not always a successful life in the common meaning of success, and it must be led here on earth if it is to be led at all. But it is a possible life.
在这一段文字里,我有两个问题:
其一,为什么用 men 而不是用 man?
另一,a social as well as a physical inheritance 所指何物,尤其 physical 这个字在这里应该如何恰当翻译成中文?

"Men" here is more subjective.
The whole paragragh talks about the fate and the character. And the character is forged both by the society, "the social inheritance" , and by the character that we inherite from our ancestors, "the physical inheritance"

1 men (旧) = people, a person 2 (这个)遗产又是人体方面的的又是社会方面的
(这个)遗产不只/光是身体方面传到的(= 'genetic'),也是社会方面传到的(= cultural)
Men(旧)等于 people, mortals, human beings eg men and gods, Jesus died to save men from their sins.

physical inheritance = genetic/racial traits inherited physically from parents, eg height, facial features, looks, bone structure, stamina
social inheritance = culture,social behaviour, traditions,values etc
that\'s my reading of it.

Discussion
How about this solution?
"Physical" could mean "bodily."
But "physical inheritance" doesn't indicate anything of characters or characteristics from the forefahters.
The word "social" has already indicated that sort of inheritance.
My first reading was of the same impression. But I need some time to think about it, because I suspect that the word "physical" can be something more than just "biological." In contrast, the word "social" is clear enough.
