Emperor Gaodi, whose name was Xiao Daocheng, succeeded the throne in the third year of Shengming’s reign (479), and he made his dynastic title as Qi. Xiao Daocheng was born with a love for literature and he was particularly good at appreciating and identifying calligraphy and paintings. He took possession of all the precious collections in the storehouse kept during the Song Dynasty.
