In Chinese religions, especially Tantric Buddhism, 加持 renders the Sanskrit term "adhiṣṭhāna", referring to the power of a buddha or a deity which a sentient being may rely upon in seeking enlightenment. It can also mean "aid" or "support," i.e. the support a sentient being receives on the path to enlightenment through the salvific power of a buddha or a deity. I'm not sure this is the context of your instance of 加持, however I thought I should contribute though this etymological use of the term in the context of Buddhist studies, as a translation of an Indian concept.
