Craze for foreign languages (Mysore, India)

Mysoreans have discovered a new enthusiasm to learn foreign languages with students opting to study French, German or Russia along with regular subjects.

When asked about the growing trend, Vincent Vasanth Kumar, co-ordinator of one of the French learning centre said, Learning foreign languages boosts their career prospects and is a value addition to their curriculum vitae as there is a huge demand for translation and interpretation in the IT sector, he said. Among all, French is easy to learn. Learning a new language also helps understand culture of that country, he says.

Anupam, who is learning French says, In this competitive world it is imperative to know more than three languages as it broadens our perspectives. I am excited to learn French as learning other languages has been my passion since childhood.

But for many, the driving force has been the career prospect that the proficiency in languages offers. Naga Supreeth, an engineering student, says multi national companies prefer students knowing foreign languages. That is why I opted to learn a foreign language.
