The measures, which will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday, will extend to the capital's surrounding areas and will remain in place for 60 days, according to the state-owned broadcaster MCOT.
Under the state of emergency, security forces will be able to detain suspects without charge, set a curfew, disperse public gatherings involving more than five people, and censor the media.
At least nine people have been killed and over 500 wounded since protesters started to occupy government buildings in November.
There has been a surge of violence since 13 January, when protesters began blocking and occupying more than ten of the capital's main thoroughfares, with a series of grenade attacks which have resulted in one death and dozens of injuries.
