Windows Vista includes a new backup program with an excellent interface that can back up to network locations, and that makes restoring data a snap. Sounds great for anyone who wants to use their network to back up PCs, doesn't it?
So what's my complaint? Only that the backup program is approximately brain-dead.
It lets you designate certain generic file types to back up -- for example, "documents" or "pictures" -- but you have to back up all files in that generic type. So, for example, there's no way to back up Word .doc files, but not PowerPoint .ppt files. When you back up "documents," you back up every single file type.

我的理解：对于doc, ppt, xls, 甚至 .psd, .fla等等文件类型，windows会将这些文件规类为和pics/music不一样的documents（都是由程序创建，且可以更改的文件类型）。

不是的，原文如果这样写的话，but的意思就比较清楚了：

就是说如果我需要单独备份doc【而不是ppt】的话，我无法办到。

相信我，没错的。这里的generic type就是指docs/pics/music等
doc可以包括任何由程序创建但是可以由同一程序更改的文件。
同样， pic 可以包括 jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp, tiff等等等等。
同样，music的分类也只是generic的，包括各种音乐格式。
相信这个备份功能也不能把jpg和bmp分开备份把。
