Müzik bütün insanlık tarihinde duygu ve bilgilerin anlatım biçimi olarak bilinir. Müzikal sesleri diğer seslerden ayıran en önemli özellik, belirli bir ritim kalıbı içinde, birbirleriyle uyumlu sesler yumağı veya topluluğu olarak algılanmasıdır.
Çeşitli insan toplulukları, sosyal oluşuma paralel olarak kültür değerlerinin ulaştığı vasata göre, müziğin etkilerini keşfetmişler ve pek çok konuda müzikten ve onun çok yakın öğeleri olan ritim ve danstan yararlanmışlardır.
Tarih belgelerine başvurarak Türk kültürünün eski devirlerdeki oluşumuna yöneldiğimizde oldukça eski sayılacak bilgilere ulaşmaktayız: “ Proto-Türk Kültürü: ... Çin kaynaklarından öğrenildiğine göre, bu kültürün merkezi Shensi ve Kansu eyaletleridir ve bu kültürü yaşatanlar, bilhassa yüksek düzlük yerlerde oturmaktaydılar. Bu kültürü getirenlerin, sonraki Türklerin ataları olduğuna şüphe yoktur. Onlar ilk göründükleri zamanlar, yani M.Ö. 3’üncü bin yılın ortalarında bile, sonraları da taşıdıkları vasıflara haiz bulunuyorlardı.”
“ M.Ö. 3 binden itibaren Altay -Türk kültürü, aynı zamanda Altay -Türk müzik kültürünün de belirleyicisidir. Altay -Türk kültürü biraz olsun dış tesirlere açıktı. Bunların kuzeyinde kapalı olan iki bölge vardı ki , bunlar da Hakas ve Tuva bölgeleri gibi, eski Türk kültürünün çok değerli hazineleriydi. Bu her iki kültür çevresi de Altay –Türk kültür çevresi ile ilişki halindeydiler.Bu devrin Altay kültürünün başlıca özelliği ise, Güney Sibirya Kültür Karakterine girmesidir. Bunun sonucu müziklerinde benzer özellikler bulunmaktadır. Altaylılar, Orhun kıyıları, Moğol bozkırları ve İrtiş boylarına etkide bulunarak ve M.Ö. II. binden itibaren de ilk yurtlarından ayrılarak gelecekteki Orta Asya Türk müzik kültürünün temellerini hazırlamışlardır.”
M.Ö. II. bin ve III. bin yıllarında Doğu Türkistan’daki Kalıntılarda flüt görülmekte. Özbekistan’ın orta bölgesinde bulunmuş, M.Ö. I. yüzyıla ve M.S. I. yüzyıla ait heykelciklerin elinde çalgı vardır. Fergana vadisi bölgesinde ise zurna çok sıkça kullanılmıştır. Tambur , Dutar, Çapraz Flüt, Balaban, Dombra topluluklarda en çok kullanılan enstrümanlardandır.
“ M.Ö. II. yüzyılda Türkler, Orta Asya’nın Kuça, Balasagun gibi önemli merkezlerinde yaşarlarken buraya görevli olarak gelen Çin generalinin, dönüşünde Türklerden götürdüğü çalgılarla Çin Sarayında bir müzik takımı kurup Türk ezgileri çaldırdığı ve bu çalgıların Hunlara ait olduğu, o çağın tarihçileri tarafından günlük saray kayıtlarına geçirildiği bilinmektedir. Bu sazlardan birinin “houkya” adında, ileriden boynu dönük, üzerinde perde delikleri bulunan ve sesinin gücü ile bilinen bir boru olduğu yine aynı kayıtlardan öğrenilmektedir.”
Türk müzik ve dans tarihi bilgileri, Türklerde müzik ve dans ile tedavi konusunun önemli malzemesi olmaktadır. Bu konuda ilgi çekici bazı belgelerden söz etmek gerekmektedir. Doğu Türkistanlı yazar Abdulhekim Baki ( Çin Halk Cumhuriyeti Azınlık Milletler Yazarları Cemiyeti’nin üyesi, Urumçi Yazarlar Birliğinin Başkan Yardımcısı ve Genel Sekreteri, Tanrıdağ Edebiyat Mecmuasının Başyazarı) tarafımıza ulaşan bir araştırma makalesinde şu bilgileri vermektedir:
“ Yazılı kaynaklara göre Uygur Türklerinin bilinen en eski müzik numuneleri günümüzden 6000-8000 yılları öncesine kadar dayanmaktadır. ‘Şincang (Doğu Türkistan) Medeniyet Numuneleri’ adlı araştırma dergisinin 1985 yılında yayınlanan 1. sayısında yer alan bir incelemede Hoten vilayetine bağlı Çerçen kazasındaki Mülçe Irmağı mecraında bulunan Mingyarkaya resminde dans eden figürlere rastlanılmıştır. Arkeologların ilmi tetkiklerine göre bu kaya resimleri zamanımızdan 6000-8000 yıl öncesine aittir. Uygur Türklerinin 3000 yıl önce Şaman dinine mensup olduğu çağlarda Şaman, Pirhon ve Bahşılar şarkılar söylemek ve dans etmek sureti ile hasta tedavi seansları ve merasimleri icra ederlerdi. Uygur Türkleri eski zamanlarda ölülerini şarkı söyleyerek ve dans ederek uğurlarlardı.
401 yılında ünlü Uygur Türk Alimi Kumuraciva Doğu Türkistan’ın Kuşen şehrinden Çin’in tarihi Başkenti Çangen’e giderek, dil, edebiyat, müzik ve heykeltıraşlık konularında dersler vermiş ve bu sahalarda 800 kadar öğrenci yetiştirmiştir.”
Melodi ve ritim birliği müzikal olgunun gereği olarak görülür. Türklerde dans, melodi ve ritim birçok amaç için kullanılıyordu. Özellikle şamanik inanç çerçevesinde ayinlerin en önemli malzemeleri melodi, ritim ve danstı. Bu ayinler sırasında kullanılan müzik aletleri kutsal kabul edilirdi. Müzik eşliğinde icra edilen danslar genellikle bazı kutsal figürlerin taklidi şeklinde olurdu. Kazak ve Kırgız Türklerinde müzik ve dans ile tedavi örneği olarak, çok eskiden beri devam eden bir dans olan “Karacorga” bir atın yürüyüşünü simgelemektedir. Kartal, kurt, ayı, geyik, kuğu, 7 evliya, at, kaz bu simgelerden bazılarıdır. Eski inanışa göre bu figürler Ataruhunu temsil etmektedirler. Adı geçen at yürüyüşünü temel alan ve günümüze kadar gelebilmiş tedavi dansı örneği olan Karacorga (Baksı Dansı)nın benzer örneklerini Azerbaycan Gobustan kayalıklarındaki figürlerde görmekteyiz. Yazılı kaynaklardan bu konuda şu bilgilere ulaşmaktayız: “ Baku’dan doğu istikametine gidilirse, bir saat kadar sonra karşınıza bir kadim insanın daha resmi çıkacaktır. Kobustan’da karmakarışık kaya yığınları arasında ansızın kayalar üzerine çizilmiş resimler göze çarpıyor: Av sahneleri, tören dansları oynayan bir grup insan, burun kısmında güneş işareti olan çok kürekli bir kayık, aslana benzeyen acayip hayvanlar. 12 bin yılı aşkın bir zaman önce burası kadim sakinlerin yerleşim yeriydi.
Diğer bir kitapta aynı konu şöyle dile getiriliyor: “... Azerbaycan’da yaşamış halkların iptidai ilkin raks formlarının meydana çıktığı yer respublikanın güney reyonlarıdır. Alimler Baku’nun yakınlarında Gobustan’da kadim rakslardan haber veren kaya tasvirlerinin raks eden figürleri aşikare çıkarmışlardır. Uzak geçmişin ressamı bu tasvirini takriben sekiz-on bin yıl bundan evvel yaratmıştır. Rakslar yalnız merasim karakterli rakslar olmuştur. Raks hiç de temaşa edilmek için değildi; aksine muayyen bir merasimin vacip elementi gibi lazım gelirdi.”
Eski Türklerde tedavi amacıyla kullanılan müzik ve dans konusu, sosyal hayatta mistik alanda önemli bir yer bulmuştur. Baksı ve Kam adı verilen tedaviciler, bu tedaviyi bir merasimle, müzik ve ritim ve de dans ile harekete geçen sezgileriyle gerçekleştiriyorlardı. Miladi VI-VII. yüzyıllarda kuzey Çin’de hüküm süren Türk soyundan bir Tabgaç hükümdarı hakkında Miladi 576 tarihli bir Çin kaynağı şunu anlatıyordu: “Hükümdar ve soydaşları, Çin’de bilinmeyen ve hoş görülmeyen bir tarzda, gök ayini sırasında raks ediyorlardı. Ayinin sonunda, kadın kamlar davullar çalarken Tabgaçlar, doğu yönünde yükselen kurban taşına doğru secde etmekteydiler.”
Miladi 569’da Batı Türk Hakanına Bizans elçisi olarak gelen Zemarkhos da, Semerkand’da Gök-Türk kamlarının davullar ve çıngıraklar çalarak, ateş etrafında devran ettiklerini görmüştü.
Din dışı rakslar ile de merasim yapılırdı. Miladi VI-VII. yüzyıllardan Çin kaynakları, Gök-Türklerin, bir ayak ile hareketli bir top üzerinde durarak, denge için kollarını iki yana açıp, diğer ayakla çok hızlı bir şekilde döndüklerini anlatır.
“...Adı geçen bu raksın Milad devrinde de uygulandığı, iç Asya göçebelerinin eski ili olan Kuzey Çin’de bir mezar duvarındaki tasvirlerden bilinir. Rakkas sağ ayağı ile bir top üzerinde denge
kurmuş, arkaya doğru uzanan sol ayağı ile dönmektedir. Açılmış kollarının yenleri uçuşur gibidir. Rakkasın önünde bir diz üzerine çökmüş müzisyen davul çalmaktadır.”
Türk müziği ve folkloru tarihi bütün Türk illerini ve kültürün pek çok dalını içine aldığı için bazı konuların birbiriyle örülü olduğunu gözlemek mümkün olmaktadır. Baksı veya Kam adı verilen tedavicilerin bir çok işlevi üstlenmeleri bu konuya güzel bir örnektir. Tedavici, icra ettiği müzik, ritim ve danslarla bir sanatçı gibi görünür, ama o trans içinde sezgi bilgisinden bahsettiği için medyumdur. Toplumun ihtiyacı ve sorularına cevap verdiği için sosyolog ve pedagog ve de psikolog rolünü de üzerine almıştır. Ulaştığı trans’ın sezgi neticesi oluşturduğu bilgi derinliği açısından, insanların duygularına yön verme imkanı sebebiyle hekim ve de manevi ihtiyaçlara cevap verme yeteneği ve konumu sebebiyle de ruhiyatçı rolünü oynamaktadır. Dede Korkut misalinde olduğu gibi. Dede Korkut bir yanda öğüt verir, bir yanda destan söyler, diğer yanda kopuz çalar, hasta tedavi eder ve çeşitli konularda iyi sonuçlar alınması için dua eder. Bütün bunlardan anlaşılacağı üzere eski Türklerde müzik ve dansla tedavi basit bir hekim işi değil sosyo-kültürel ve spiritüel bir fenomendir. Bu konuya açıklık getirmek için bazı örnekler şöyle sıralanabilir: “XI. yüzyıl tarihçilerinden
Gardizi, Kırgızlara dair şu malumatı veriyor: Kırgızlar arasında Faginum (Kam) dedikleri bir kişi vardır; her yıl muayyen bir günde gelir, çalgıcıları ve her türlü çalgı aletlerini getirirler. Çalgıcılar çalmaya başlar, Kam bayılarak düşer; bundan sonra ondan o yıl neler olacağını, kıtlık, bereket, yağmur, kuraklık, tehlike, emniyet, düşman saldırısı hakkında sorarlar. Kam hepsini söyler ve ekseriya onun dediği olur.”
İptidai şamanizmde şaman ile tabibin aynı şahıs olduğu kabul görür.
“...Kamların tanrılar ve ruhlar hakkındaki tasavvurları dini törenlerde okudukları dua ve ilahilerdeki tavsiflerden anlaşılabilirdi. Fakat bu ilahileri ve duaları tespit etmek güçtür. Ayinlerden sonra kam bu okuduklarını tekrarlayamaz, çünkü kam dualarını istiğrak (trans) halinde irticalen söyler ve unutur.”
Balasagunlu Yusuf Hacip ‘Kutadgu Bilig’de kamları otaçılar (tabibler) ile bir tutmuş; kamların insan topluluğu için yararlı kişiler olduğuna işaret etmiştir.

(Gerek hekim, tabib tut, gerek kam tut;
Eceli gelene ilaç fayda vermez.)
Bir başka sözü de şöyle söylüyor:
“Kamug igke ot ol emi belgülüg
Ol ig emlegüçi kam belgülüg”
(Her derdin belli ilacı, tedavi edecek kamı bulunur.)
Kanaati temsil eden Odgurmış adlı zahid, hakana nasihat verirken ”bazı insanlar yoksul; bazı insanlar da kaygı ile yıpranmışlardır. Bunların ilacı, dertlerine derman sendedir. Bunları tedavi et, bunların Kam’ı ol” diyor ki dikkate değer.

İslamlaşmaya başlayan kamların dualarına Peygamber’in, meleklerin, evliyanın ve şeyhlerin adları girmeye başlamıştır. Doğu Türkistan Türkleri, Yakutlar gibi, erkek şamana “oyun” derler. Kırgız-Kazaklar’da şaman yerini tutan ve onun ödevlerini uygulayan kişiye “Baksı” ya da “Bahşı” denir.
Baksı veya Kam adı verilen bu Asya Türk tedavicileri, tedavi seansı sırasında kutsal saydıkları müzik aletlerine özel önem verirlerdi. Bunlar içinde kopuz kelimesiyle ifade edilen, yay,ağız ve parmakla çalınan aletlerin manevi ve terapatik bağlantıları vardı. Kazakistan’ın Almatı kentinde tanıştığımız bir kopuzcu olan Simetay’ın aktardığı bilgiler önem taşımaktadır: ” Kopuz Dede Korkut’un sazıdır ve yayla çalınır. Baş kısımdaki tellerin bağlandığı ses burgularından birisi güneşi diğeri ayı temsil eder. Gövdede telleri taşıyan köprü kısmının altı yeri, üstü de göğü temsil etmektedir. Ses yayın sürtünmesi ile ikisinin arasından çıkar; bu ses ata ruhu ile bağlantı kurmaya yardımcı olur.
Hakas, yani eski Kırgız Türklerinin yurdu, Kem ırmaklarının çevrelerinden başlar; ünlü Yenisey ırmağının başlangıçlarına kadar uzanır. Göktürk yazıtlarının Yenisey yazıtları adlı bölümü buradadır. Eski Türk sazlarının veya kopuzlarının en orijinal ve en eski şekli de buradan belgeleniyor. Vertkoy bu Hakas komıs veya kopuzunu şöyle tarif ediyor: ... Komis 2 veya 3 telli bir sazdır. Altay çevresinde, Tobşur denen saz ile Tuva’daki Topşulur adlı sazlarla aynı kökten gelir. Teknesi ve sapı aynı kütükten çıkarılır. Alt kısmı koyun veya geyik boynuzu ile kaplanır. Telleri at kılı veya koyun barsağı ile yapılır. İki telinden biri ak diğeri kara idi. 70-80 santim kadar uzunluğu vardır.
Yazarın şu tespitleri önem taşımaktadır: “ ... adı geçen bu musiki aleti önce deri ile kaplanıyor; derinin üzeri de geyik boynuzları ile perçinleniyordu; boğuk ve iniltili ses sihir dolu olarak böyle bir tekneden çıkıyor ve çevreye yayılıyordu.... Müzik, yalnızca zevk, neşe, aşk, hüzün ve eğlence katkısı değildir. Devlet, millet birliğini oluşturan; savaşta orduya duygu veren, yürüyüş ve hareketini düzenleyen de, ses ve ritimdir. Müzik ve kopuz veya saz, tedavi eden, ruhları dinlendiren, iradelere güç etkisi veren, aynı zamanda toplulukta birlik yaratan sosyal aletlerdi.
1- Velilik ve ululuk sembolü idi. Dede Korkut’ta görüldüğü gibi.
2- Gazi erenlerin başına ne geldiğini söyleyen bir sembol idi.
3- Ulularla haberleşme; medet ve yardım isteme sesiydi.
4- Kopuzla övülen yiğitlere güç veren, boğaları ve buğraları yenmelerine imkan veren ilahi bir sesti. Kanturalı hikayesinde olduğu gibi.
5- Topluluğa haber veren, halkı uyaran kutlu ses de kopuzun kutlu sesidir. Beyrek’in yurduna dönüşünde, atını verip bir kopuz alması gibi...
6- İyi ruhları çağıran, kötü ruhları kovan kutlu ses de kopuzun sesidir.
“... yarı müslüman, bahşı adlı kopuzcular, sihir, fal, tedavi, iyi ruhları çağırma, kötü ruhları kovma törenlerinde yalnız kopuz kullanıyorlardı.”
Prof. Dr. Bahaeddin Ögel’in Radlof’dan aktardığı şu bilgiler kopuz hakkında daha net tarifler vermektedir:
“... Baksa, çok eski şamanların zamanımıza kadar gelen örneklerinden biridir. Hastalıklarda, yardımcı olmak için çağrılırlardı. Baksa’ların, şamanların davulu yerine iki telli bir kemençeleri vardır. Kenarları zillerle ve ses veren maden parçaları ile süslenmiştir. Buna kobus derler. Bir de asa taşırlardı. Değnek şeklindeki bu asanın başında da bir çıngırak ve maden parçaları vardı....”
Kazak ve Kırgızların inanışına göre, Korkut Ata en büyük velilerden sayılır. Kazakların kopuz ve tombure, dombra gibi sazlarını icat eden de yine Korkut Ata idi.
Eski Türkler’de müziğin çeşitli alanlarda ve bu alanlar içinde hasta tedavisi için kullanıldığını çeşitli kaynaklardan inceledikten sonra, Türk müziğinin tonal yapısı üzerinde durabiliriz. Müzikolog Mahmud Ragıp Kösemihal ve Ahmet Adnan Saygun bu tonal yapıyı pentatonizm (beş seslilik) üzerine inşa etmektedirler. Yedili sistemde oktavıyla ‘sekiz ses’ten oluşan “gam” veya “dizi” tarifine karşı pentatonizmde oktavıyla beraber 6 ses bulunmaktadır. Japon Müziğinde pentatonik melodiler çok fazla bulunmakta olup.Japon müzikologlar bu pentatonik dizilere ‘minyo’, ‘gagakulitsu’, ‘riyuku’, ‘miyakobuşi’ gibi adlar vermişlerdir.
Kazak Türkleri’nin tedavi seanslarında, dombra ve kılkopuz eşliğinde söyledikleri melodik sözler ve Kazan Türkleri geleneğinde halen örnekleri bulunabilen Ural tedavicilerinin dombra, koray ve ağız kopuzu (gubuz) ile söyledikleri şarkı ve dualar tamamen pentatonik özellikler göstermektedir. Kazak, Kırgız, Altay, Ural, Tuva, Hakas, Saha, Karaçay , Çuvaş vb. Türk topluluklarının bugüne kadar gelmiş ve halk içinden derlenmiş, notaya alınıp kaydedişmiş pek çok pentatonik şarkı, dua, melodi, küy (enstrümantal olarak icra edilen ve bir konuyu dile getiren müzikal eser. Örnek: “Nazlı Hanımın yürüyüşü”) vardır.
Pentatonik müzik formunun eski Türklerin tedavisinde temel elemanlardan birisi olduğu bilgisiyle bu tonal özellikleri incelemek yerinde olacaktır:
“Pentatonik müzik tarihten önceki çağlardan kalmadır ve bir Asya malıdır. Alman müzikolog Kurt Sachs: Ezcümle pentatonizm bir yandan şimal kenarında-İskoçya’da, Laponlar arasında- bir yandan da cenupta, Macaristan’da, Gregua tegannisinde, eskilerin musikisinde ve hatta İspanya’da bulunuyor. Bu halde Pentatonizm (major) ve (minör) makamlarından daha eski olmak lazımdır.
“Dava şudur: ortada bir ‘pentatonik çatı’ hakikati var; en eski ve Asyai olan öz budur. A) Aslında heptatonik iken bu pentatonik çatı ananesine göre sadeleştirilmiş ezgileri bulmak, B) ve aslında öz pentatonik iken süs notları, geçici notlar veya çarpmalar gibi yarım-tonlarla heptatonik bir renk almış (fakat çatı notlarının dizisi gene pentatonik kalan) ağızları meydana koymak ayrı ayrı çalışma mevzularıdır; bu yollarda bulunacak örnekler, öz pentatonik ( pentatonik anhemitonik) tiplerinin kadrosunu genişletmeye yararlar...”
“... Değerli kompozitör Bela Bartok’un bir iki umumi incelemesini okumakla iktifa edelim: Eski çığırdaki Macar ezgilerinin arkaik boyası ve parlando-rubato ritmi bize, bu ezgilerin köylü sınıfı arasında saklı kalmış yaşlı bir musiki kültürünün bakiyelerini temsil ettikleri ihtimalini düşündürüyor. Eskilik taşıyan karakterleri, en başta pentatonik bir dizi olan şu en kuvvetli ses dizisinden ileri gelir: Sol, Si bemol, Do, Re, Fa, Sol..... Pentatonik dizi sistemleri daha ziyade ilk Macarların Asya’dan getirmiş oldukları yaşlı bir musiki kültürü ile karşı karşıya bulunduğumuz sanısını verir: Çeremislerin, Tatarların ve Kırgızların pentatonik musikileri ile doğrudan doğruya ilişikli bulunması muhtemel bir musiki.....”
Fransız yazar M.H.Prunieres, müzikolog Dr. R. Lachmann,Prof. Hornbestel, Fransız M. Alexis Chottin Afrika’daki Berberi ve Tuareg musikilerini incelemişler ve Türkistan pentatoniklerinin temiz ve net örneklerini gözlemlemişler ve Afrika- Orta Asya müzikal bağlantılarına işaret etmişlerdir.
1979 yılı Kasım ayında Londra’da bulunan Nordoff-Robbins müzik terapi enstitüsünü ziyaret etmiştim. Meşhur keman virtüözü Y. Menuhin’in yöneticisi olduğu bu enstitünün ikinci başkanı Juliette Alvin’le görüşmüş ve otistik çocukların müzikle tedavi seanslarını izlemiştim. Bu seanslarda piyano ve ritim sazlar eşliğinde pentatonik melodilerle terapi icra ediliyordu. Sayın J. Alvin pentatonik müzik icraatının çocuklarda kendine güven ve kararlılık duygusu oluşturduğunu ve bu duygularla otizmin tedavi edildiğini bana açıklamıştı. Benim gözlemlerim de bu teoriyi doğrular biçimde idi.
Avrupa’nın pek çok ülkesinde “ WALDORFSCHULE” adı altında Rudolf Steiner adındaki Antroposophi biliminin kurucusunun eğitimini sürdüren okullar bulunmaktadır. Sanat ile eğitimi ön planda tutan bu okullarda müzik, en önemli eğitim konusu olarak ele alınmakta ve özel olarak yapılmakta olan ‘arp’ ve ‘flütler’ ile pentatonik müzik eğitimi verilmektedir. Modern caz müziğindeki improvizasyon kolaylığı ve sezgi bağlantısının gerisinde pentatonik gamlardan yararlanılması bulunmaktadır. Günümüz caz ustalarından Amerikalı tanınmış virtüöz piyanist Keith Jarret. Şöhretini cazda kullandığı pentatonik skalalara borçludur.
Dünyanın bir çok bölgesinde (Orta Asya; Ural, Başkurt, Kırgız, Kazak, Sibirya, Tuva, Hakas, Saha, Altay,Anadolu, Çuvaş, Çin, Japon, Endonezya, Hindistan, Afrika, İskoçya, Kuzey,Orta ve Güney Amerika ve Eskimo) pentatonik müzik örnekleri çeşitli amaçlar için kullanılmaktadır. Bu amaçlar içinde trans ve tedavi konuları özellik taşımakta ve önemli sayılmaktadır. Pentatonik melodilerin uygun bir konsantrasyon durumunda iç duygulardan üretilip kolayca şuur vasatına ulaştığı ve improvizasyon şeklinde sonsuz denecek kadar velud varyantlara ulaştığı bilinmektedir. Asya Baksı’ları ve Kam’ları bazen günlerce süren ayinlerinde pentatonik melodileri irticalen icra edip trans haline girebilmektedirler. Bu konuda yazılı bir belgeyi aynen aktarmakta fayda görüyorum: “Sıtma ve Şamanizm:Burada ben müthiş bir sıtmaya tutulmuştum. Bu bende Buhara’dan beri vardı. Hükümet azasından Abdülhamit Arifov kinin getirmişti. O da kulaklarıma kötü tesir ediyordu. Bir gün dediler ki yakında aq-car ismindeki köyde çok tecrübeli bir baksı yani şaman var. Ona tedavi ettirelim. Ben de çarnaçar razı oldum. Bahşıya haber verdiler köyüne gittik. Meğerki bunlar Karlıklar’danmış; o bir gün hazırlığını görecekmiş. İkinci gün akşamı gittik. Bir Özbek çadırı içinde büyük bir ateş yakılmıştı. Kapkara sakallı 40 yaşlarında görünen sağlam yapılı Baksı normal bir insan sıfatıyla çay içip konuştuktan sonra arkadaşlarıyla bir daire yaptı. Elinde düngür denilen davulu çalarak şamani şarkılarını söyleyip dönmeye başladı. Başkaları da dönüyorlardı. Bu merasim uzun sürünce Baksı Bana geldi. Sen bize inanmıyorsun; ruhlar gelmiyor,okumayı tatil edelim dedi. Ben de aman tatil etme, ben inanırım dedim. Yine bir müddet döndüler, çaldılar şarkı söylediler. Nihayet bunlardan biri vecde geldi. Ağzından beyaz köpükler çıktı ve kendini kaybetti. Onu bir kenara çıkarıp yatırdılar, böylece birkaç kişi vecde geldikten sonra nihayet Baksı’nın kendisi de vecde geldi. Orada hazır bir demir kürek vardı. Onu yanan ateşe koymuşlardı. Bir ağaç sap sokarak Baksı küreği kaldırdı. Ağaç saplar yanmaya başladı. Ağzına su atıp küreğe püskürttü. Nihayet o kendine geldi; bana da artık iyileşeceksin ilaç filan almayın dedi. Ağzına yanmış küreği aldığı halde siyah bıyıkları yanmamıştı. Ateşin sahte olmadığını da sıçrayıp yüzüme kadar gelen su damlacıklarından biliyorum. İşte bu suretle hayatımda ilk defa olarak hakiki bir şaman ayini görmüş oldum; gerçi küçüklüğümde de böyle bir hastalığımı bizde ‘Bağucu’ denilen Baksı tedavi etmişti. Bundan sonra kinin almadım ve sıtmayı da hissetmedim. Bu zat dolandırıcı olmayıp hakiki Baksı sayılıyormuş. Hiçbir ücret veya hediye kabul etmedi. Bu şaman ayinlerini yaptırmam burada yaşayan Özbeklerin bana karşı münasebetlerinde daha samimi olmalarına sebep oldu. Bu muhitte Özbekler bana çok hürmet ederler ve molla diye konuşurlardı. Cebbar Bek bir gün Özbek eşrafından 40’a yakın zevatı beni tanıtmak üzere çağırmıştı. Bunlar emir taraftarı değillerdi. Onlarla çok güzel sohbetler yaptık. Böylece Cebbar’ın yanında bir aydan fazla zaman kaldım.”
Türk müzik terapi geleneğinin temel malzemesi olan melodik yapının pentatonik özellikler göstermesi konusunda şu tespitler önem taşımaktadır.
“ Pentatonizmin eskiliği: Gerek Firikya pentatonikleri hakkındaki Grek notlarının, ve gerek Macarların Asya’dan getirdikleri ezgilerin ana çatısının gene o olması keyfiyeti, pentatoniğin Asyai eskiliğini belirtmeye yetecek ilk deliller gibi sayılır. Fakat gelecek kitapta, bir takım Leh, İskandinav, İskoç ve İrlanda şarkılarında ve Afrikanın Berberi müziklerinde de pentatonizmin şümullü yeri bulunduğunu görünce, onun ‘eskiliği’ maddesinden başka en uzak göçlerle olan ilişiği meselesi üzerinde de düşünmek gerekli olduğuna inanacağız. İşte böylece, Türk halk musikisinin en eski tonal tipinin “pentatonik çığır” olduğu anlaşılmış oluyor, çeşitlerini mukayeseli bir şekilde belirtmek işi Türk müzikolojisinin başlıca endişelerinden olmaktadır.”
Günümüzde eski Baksı’ların trans, dans, kopuz, dombra, davul birlikteliği ile örülen tedavi seansları, Kazakistan,Altay, Saha, Kırgızistan Tuva, Ural bölgelerinde hala yaşamaktadır. Karacorga adı verilen eski Baksı dansı, tarafımızdan aktif müzik terapinin yaşayan en eski örneği olarak dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinde bulunan 11 merkez ( Madrid, Barselona, Zürich, Viyana, Rosenau, Berlin, Mannheim, Freiburg, Almatı, Bişkek, İstanbul) ve 6 okul (Rosenau, Zürich, Berlin, Mannheim, Madrid, Barselona) faaliyeti kapsamında hem eğitim için hem de çeşitli hasta gruplarının tedavisi için kullanılmaktadır ve öğretilmektedir. Münih Yüksek Müzik Akademisi (Hochschule für müsic), Rosenau müzik terapi enstitüsü ve Marmara Üniversitesi eğitim öğretim kooperasyonu bünyesinde, akademik müzik terapi eğitiminde eski Türklerin müzik ve dans terapi geleneği öğrencilere tarafımızdan öğretilmektedir.
Dünyaca tanınan kalp cerrahı Prof. Dr. Mehmet Öz ölüm korkusu yüzünden kalp ameliyatlarında ölüm vakalarının çokluğunu belirtirken, eski Türklerin müzik terapi uygulamalarının örnek melodik icra şekillerini içeren ve tarafımızdan hazırlanan müzik terapi CD’lerinin dinletilmesiyle ölüm vakalarının azaldığını ve tedavide başarı sağlandığını kendi kitabında tarafımıza ayırdığı sayfalarında yazarak belirtmektedir.
Günümüzde hala yaşayan ve çok eski zamanlardan beri Türk kültüründe özenle yaşatılan bir örnek, Kazak, Kırgız, ve Altay Türklerinde ‘Baksı Dansı’, ‘Karacorga’ veya ‘Baksı tedavi seansı’ olarak bilinen bir müzik – movement terapi şeklidir. Bu seansı yöneten Baksı (görücü, gören, bakan) Ata ruhunun seçtiği ve görevlendirdiği bir kişi olarak toplumca kabul edilmiş, terapi seanslarındaki isabetli uygulamaları sebebiyle kendisine saygı duyulan bir kimsedir. Baksı önce dua ile ‘Ata-ruhu’na iltica eder ve yavaş yavaş ilk bağlantıyı kurduğu yerden ayağa kalkarken spiral şeklindeki el-kol hareketleriyle spiritüel enerjiye konsantre olup, o enerjinin kollarında oluşmasına çalışır. Bu sırada Dombra , Kılkopuz, Şangobız, adlı enstrümanlar ve su sesi ile müzisyenler kendisine eşlik eder. İkinci safhada adı geçen enerji omuzlara yöneltilir ve omuz hareketleri ile birlikte ritim ve melodi değişir. Fizik bedendeki son durak olan baş hareketi başladığında müzisyenler ritmi ve melodiyi uygun şekilde icra ederler. Sonraki bölüm seansın en önemli yeri olup; Baksı, bu bölümde serbest ritim ve melodi ile sezgilerine yönelir ve improvize ( içine doğduğu gibi ) dans ile trans (vecd, istiğrak, duyguların yücelmesi) haline girer. Trans sırasında hasta için neler yapılması gerektiğine ait bilgileri, sezgileri ile algılar ve uygular. Bu bölüm sonsuzluk ve ölümsüzlük, değişmeyen bilgi ile bir olma bölümü olarak tarif edilir. Daha sonra dönüş başlar, baş, omuz ve kol hareketleri sıra ile uygulanıp yer bağlantısı sonucu oturularak seansa son verilir. Seansın süresini genellikle Baksı tayin eder.
Yard. Doç. Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç ve Teo. Psk. Gerhard Kadir Tuçek (Avusturya Doğu Müzik Terapisi Okulu Müdürü) tarafından geliştirilen ve Avrupa’da bir çok hastane ve tedavi merkezlerinde uygulanan aktif müzik terapi seansı: Bu uygulamada ana düşünce; unutulmuş duyguları yeniden uyarmak ve yeni duygular üreterek kişinin içinde bulunduğu hali değiştirmek ve sağlıklı yaşama şartlarına adaptasyonu sağlamaktır. Bu amaçla, uygun hareketlerle, tabiatta bozulmadan devam eden uyuma ve dengeye ulaşma faaliyeti olarak tarif edilebilecek olan seans; pentatonik ve yarı pentatonik ve otantik olarak yaşayan Türk musikisi repertuarı ile, tabii, otantik enstrümanların icrası beraberliğinde yürütülmektedir. Otistik, nevrotik, pasif, korkak, çekingen, sıkıntılı kişiler ile spastik, özürlü kişilerde hem duyguların değişmesi şeklinde hem de egzersiz vasıtası ile hareket kabiliyetinin gelişmesi yönünde olumlu terapi etkileri bu seans ile sağlanabilmektedir.
SEANSIN UYGULANMASI:
1- 1. hareket el, göz ve kalp arasında denge sağlamak ve elleri tanımak ( Beyindeki nöronların en çoğu eller ile dile ayrılmıştır.)
2- Hareket kolların dıştan içe daire çizmesi şeklinde olup; tarifi, dış tesir ve uyarılardan uzaklaşıp, bize bahşedilen gerçek değerlere ve kendi özümüze yönelmek. Sağlık için, birlik ve bütünlük duygularına ulaşmak için iç konsantrasyon.
3- Hareket kolların dıştan içe geniş kavis çizerek, yere paralel hareketi. Kavuşma, yol ve mesafe kat etme, ulaşma, yüzme, uçma, koşma gibi tabii hareketlerle rezonans çalışması.
4- Hareket stres ve fizik-enerji blok merkezleri olarak bilinen omuzları ve sırt-göğüs kas ve kemiklerini çalıştıran bir hareket. Eller belde sabit tutularak iki omzun da öne arkaya ve sağa-sola hareketi esas alınır.(Baksı dansı örneği).
5- Hareket eller belde olmak üzere başın öne-arkaya ve yanlara hareketidir. Özellikle ense ve boyun kasları ile beyne giden sinir ve damarlar için geliştirici ve yol açıcı egzersiz olarak tarif edilir.(Baksı dansı örneği).
6- Hareket seans boyunca öğrenilen hareketlerin tabiat hareketlerindeki uyum ve denge düşünülerek zorlama olmadan – içe doğacak ve derinden hissedilecek şekilde icraatı. (Kuş uçuşu, at koşuşu, su akışı, rüzgar esişi vb. gibi). Bu seans sonunda ayağa kalkılır ve bütün vücut hareket eder, yavaş yavaş ağırlaşarak seans biter.
Türk tarihi ve kültüründe önemli bir yeri olan müzik, dans ve bunlarla yapılan tedavi konusunda; pentatonik müzik formu ve Baksı-Kam tedavi geleneğinin yanısıra olgunlaşıp yerleşen ‘makam müziği ile tedavi’ günümüz tıbbında yeniden güncelleşmiş bulunmaktadır. Bin yıldan daha önceki zamanlarda Orta Asya’da; Horasan ve Uygur bölgelerinde gelişerek yayılan makam musikisi hakkında Farabi,İbn-i Sina, Ebu Bekir Razi, Hasan Şuri, Hekimbaşı Gevrekzade Hafız Hasan Efendi, Haşim Bey eserler yazmışlar ve makamların duygular ve organlarla ilişkilerini tasniflerle belirtmişlerdir. Pentatonik müzik Türk illerinde gelişmeye devam ederken, yedili sistem olan ve bir tam sesin dokuz komadan oluşması esasına dayalı makam sistemi, takriben dört yüzü geçen makam zenginliği ile kültür ve sanatımıza büyük katkıda bulunmuştur.
PASİF ( RECEPTİV) TERAPİ
M.S. 834-932 yıllarında yaşamış olan müslüman Türk bilginlerinden Ebu Bekir Razi, melankoliklerin tedavisi üzerine yazdığı bir eserinde şöyle diyor: “ ... melankolik hasta kesinlikle meşguliyetle tedavi edilmelidir. ... melankolik hasta balık tutma veya avlanma gibi eğlenceli işlerden biri ile uğraşmalıdır. Mümkünse çeşitli oyunlara alıştırılmalıdır; huyunu, ahlakını, davranışlarını beğendiği ve sevdiği kimse ile buluşup görüşmeli özellikle güzel sesle okunan şarkılar dinlemelidir.”
Büyük Türk Bilgini Farabi (870-950) makamların ruha etkisini şöyle sınıflandırır:
1- Rast makamı: İnsana sefa(neşe, huzur) verir.
2- Rehavi makamı: İnsana beka (sonsuzluk fikri) verir.
3- Küçek makamı: İnsana hüzün ve elem verir.
4- Büzürk makamı: İnsana havf (korku) verir.
5- İsfahan makamı: İnsana hareket kabiliyeti ve güven hissi verir.
6- Neva makamı: İnsana lezzet ve ferahlık verir.
7-Uşşak makamı: İnsana gülme ‘dilhek’ verir.
8-Zirgüle makamı: İnsana uyku ’nevm‘ verir.
9- Saba makamı: İnasana şecaat (cesaret, kuvvet) verir.
10- Puselik makamı: İnsana kuvvet verir.
11- Hüseyni makamı: İnsana sulh ( sükunet, rahatlık) verir.
12- Hicaz makamı: İnsana tevazu (alçak gönüllülük ) verir.
Büyük islam bilgin ve filozoflarından İbn-i Sina ( 980-1037), musikinin tıpta oynadığı rolü şöyle tanımlamaktadır: “ ...tedavinin en iyi yollarından, en etkililerinden biri, hastanın akli ve ruhi güçlerini arttırmak, ona hastalıkla daha iyi mücadele için cesaret vermek, ona en iyi musikiyi dinletmek , onu sevdiği insanlarla bir araya getirmektir...”
İbn-i Sina, Farabi’nin eserlerinden çok yaralandığını ve hatta musikiyi de ondan öğrenerek Tıp mesleğinde tatbike koyduğunu söylemektedir. Arapça yazdığı Kitap’ün necat ve Kitab’ün Şife’deki12 fasıl tamamen musikiye ayrılmış olduğundan, bu kısım Baron Rodolph Dearlangar tarafından Fransızca olarak ‘La musique Arap’ adıyla yayınlanmıştır.
Eski Türk hekimlerinden Şuuri’nin ‘Tadil-i Emzice’ adlı eserinde müzik ile tedavi hakkında geniş bilgi vardır. Şuuri, ‘Tadil-i Emzice’de belirli makamların günün belirli zamanlarında etkili olduğunu belirtmektedir. Ona göre:
1- Rast ve Rehavi makamları: Seher zamanları etkilidir.
2- Hüseyni makamı: Sabahleyin etkilidir.
3- Irak makamı: Kuşlukta etkilidir.
4- Nihavend makamı: Öğleyin etkilidir.
5- Hicaz makamı: İki ezan arası etkilidir.
6- Buselik makamı: İkindi zamanı etkilidir.
7- Uşşak makamı: Gün batarken etkilidir.
8- Zengüle makamı: Gurubdan sonra etkilidir.
9- Muhalif makamları: Yatsıdan sonra etkilidir.
10- Rast makamı: Gece yarısı etkilidir.
11- Zirefkend makamı: Gece yarısından sonra etkilidir.
Şuuri’ye göre musikinin meclis adamlarına olan etkileri de birbirlerinden farklıdır.
1- Ulema ( Alimler ) Meclisine: Rast ve Tevabii makamları
2- Ümera ( Emirler ) Meclisine: Isfahan ve Tevabii makamları
3- Dervişler Meclisine: Hicaz ve Tevabii makamları
4- Sufiler Meclisine: Rehavi ve Tevabii makamları etkilidir.
Günümüzden 900 sene önce Selçuklu Sultanı Nureddin Zengi tarafından Şam’da yaptırılan Nureddin Hastanesi’nde musiki makamları tedavi amacıyla kullanılmıştır.
Sonraki dönemlerde Amasya, Sivas, Kayseri, Manisa, Bursa, İstanbul (Fatih Külliyesi) ve Edirne şifahanelerinde musiki ile tedavi uygulanmıştır. Evliya Çelebi seyahatnamesinde şöyle yazılıdır: “ Merhum ve mağfur Bayezid Veli ... Vakıfnamesinde hastalara deva, dertlilere şifa, divanelerin ruhuna gıda ve def’i sevda olmak üzere on adet hanende ve sazende gulam tahsis etmiştir ki, üçü hanende biri neyzen, biri kemani, biri musikari, biri santuri, biri udi olup, haftada üç kere gelerek hastalara ve delilere musiki faslı verirler...”
Anlaşıldığına göre, Horasan kaynaklı Türk Sanat musikisi ve Horasan-Anadolu musiki makamlarımızın olgunluğu ile gelişen pasif-receptiv müzik terapi geleneği icrası sırasında hastalar rahat bir şekilde oturarak veya uzanarak dinlenme halinde idiler. Bu tedavi şeklinde amaç, hastaların emosyonel durumlarını değiştirerek onları rahatlatmak ve kendine güvenlerini kazanmalarına yardımcı olma idi.
Günümüzde tarafımızdan uygulanan teknikte bu esaslara sadık kalınmıştır. Hasta istirahat pozisyonunu alır, bir seans süresince geniş ve rahatlatıcı bir ritim ve su sesi eşliğinde, Ney, Rebab, Çeng, Ud, Dombra ve Rübab ile emprovize (ritimli taksim) yapılır ve uygun makamlar üzerinde çalışılır. Bu şekilde bir icra sırasında, otizm’den ve psikolojik çocuk hastalıklarından Geriatri’ye kadar çeşitli psikolojik ve fizik hastalıklarda olumlu değişmeler ve iyileşmeler gözlenmektedir. Bu konuda Dr. L. Gutjahr ve Prof. V. Mechleid tarafından EEG ölçümleri yapılmış ve en az 1000 yıllık bu gelenek bugünün labarotuvarında doğrulanmıştır. 400’den fazla olduğu bilinen bu makamlardan önemli olan 10-15 tanesi üzerinde uygulamalardan sonra tedavide kullanılacak kaset ve CD’ler tarafımızdan vücuda getirilmiştir.
Viyana’da Meidling Rehabilitasyon Merkezi’nde komada bulunan hastalara Türk musikisi makamları dinletilerek terapi uygulamaları yapılmakta olup, beyinde alfa ve teta dalgalarının değiştiği tespit edilmiştir ve bir çok hastanın müzik terapi seansları ile komadan çıktıkları gözlenmiştir.

Music is known as an expression of feelings and information throughout human history. The difference between musical sounds and other sounds are their perception within a rhythm pattern as a set or gathering of congruous sounds.
Various human communities, have discovered the effects of music and benefited from its close elements which are dance and rhythm, according to their apex of the cultural values relative to their social formation.
When we consult historical documents to approach the formation of Turkish culture in ancient times, we reach information which can be classified as being very old: “The Proto-Turkish Culture… According to Chinese sources, the epicenter of this culture is Shensi and Kansu provinces, and the people who created this culture used to live especially in the highlands. There is no doubt that, the people who brought this culture are ancestors of Turks in general. Even when they are seen as early as 3rd millennium BC, they were carrying the traits that they were to be known for later.”
“Beginning in the 3rd millennium BC, the Altai-Turkish culture also determines the nature of Altai-Turkish music culture. At that time Altai-Turkish culture was open to foreign influences. To the north of these were two close cultures; the Hakas and Tuva regions which were very precious treasures of Turkish culture. Both of these regional cultures were in interaction with Altai-Turkish cultural environment. The basic specialty of the Altai culture of this era is that, it was under the influence of Southern Siberian cultural character. Due to this there are similarities in their music. The Altaians left their original homeland in the second millennium by influencing the Mongolian steps, Orkun banks and Irtish tribes and founded the base of the Central Asian musical culture of the future.”
In the archeological remains dating back to the 2nd and the 3rd millennium, we see flutes in Eastern Turkestan. In the hands of small statues found in Central Uzbekistan, dating back to the 1st millennium BC and 1st millennium AD, there are musical instruments. In the region of the valley of Fergana, zurna ( a Turkish flute) is seen a lot. Tambur, Dutar, Cross-flute, Balaban, Dombra are other instruments used by these communities.
“In the 2nd century BC, while Turks were living in the important Kucha and Balasagun regions of Central Asia, a Chinese General was assigned to the area. When he returned, he brought back with him Turkish musical instruments and assembled a group in the Chinese palace to play Turkish tunes. The royal historian of the time, registered these as musical instruments belonging to the Huns. According to the same sources, one of these instruments is a pipe, with pitch holes on it and a bent neck named ‘houkya’.”
The information on Turkish music and dance history, is an important material for the subject of healing with music and dance among Turks. Here we have to mention various important documents. In a research article which reached us, the East Turkestani author Abdul Hekim Baki (Vice President of Minority Nations of People’s Republic of China Author’s Union, the editorial writer of Tanridag Literature Magazine) informs us as follows: “According to written documents, the oldest known samples of Uighur music, date back as far as 6th and 8th millennia BC. In the first issue of the research magazine 'Sin Quiang (East Turkestan) Civilization Samples’ which was published 1985, there are dancing figurines in the Mingyarkaya pictures which is located near Mulche river in Cherchen province. Acording to Archeologist these date back 6 to 8 thousand years. 3000 years ago, at the time when Uighur Turks practiced shamanism, the Shamans, the Pirhons and the Baksy were conducting healing sessions by singing and dancing. In ancient times, the Uighur sent their dead to the other world by singing and dancing.
In the year 401 AD, the learned Uighur-Turkish sage Kumuraciva went to the historical Chinese capital Changen from Kushen in East Turkestan, and lectured and trained around 800 students in the fields of linguistics, literature, music and sculpture.
The unity between rhythm and melody is seen as an essence of musical phenomena. Turks used dance, rhythm and melody in various ways within the framework of Shamanistic belief. The most important material of a ritual were melody, rhythm and dance. The musical instruments used in these rituals were regarded as sacred. The dances which accompanied the music were usually the imitation of sacred figurines. ‘Karajorga’ which is a very ancient dance of the Kyrgyz and the Kazakh represent the gait of a horse. Some of the symbols used for the dance are: the Eagle, the Wolf, the Bear, the Deer, the Swan, 7 saints, the Horse and the Goose. According to ancient beliefs these figures represent the souls of the ancestors.
Similar examples to the healing dance named Karajorga (Dance of the Baksy), which has survived to this day, can be seen in the Gobustan Rocks in Azerbaijan. From the study of written sources we reached the following information: “If you continue east from Baku for an hour, you will come across of the picture of an ancient man once again. In the rocky formations of Kobustan, you suddenly come face to face with drawings on rocks: hunting scenes, a group of people performing ritual dances, a multi-rowed boat with a sun sign at its tip, strange animals that looked like lions. These places were the residence of ancient dwellers more than 12 thousand years ago.”
In a different book addressing the same issue, we hear the following: “The ancient dance forms of the denizens of Azerbaijan originated in the southern part of the republic. Scientists have discovered dancing figures which gives news of dances from the ancient times. The artist of the long gone past has made his description 8 to 10 thousand years before our time. Dances have always had a ritualistic character. Dance was not a matter of show, on the contrary it was the essential element of a certain ceremony.”
In ancient Turks, music and dance used for healing had an important place in the mystical area of social life. The curers called the Baksy or the Kham, were initiating the healing ceremony by intuition which was activated by music, rhythm and dance. A Chinese source dating back to 576 AD narrates the following about a Tabgach ruler who had a Turkic origin and lived around 6th and 7th centuries AD: “The ruler and his descendants were dancing in the midst of a sky ritual , which was not known and was disapproved of in China. At the end of the ritual while woman shamans were beating the drums, the Tabgach were prostrating to the altar which was elevated towards the east.”
In 569 AD, Zemarkhos, who came as a Byzantine envoy to the Western Turkish Hakan, had seen Turkish Khams whirling around a fire while beating drums and rattling rattles.
Ceremonies were also carried out with none-religious dances. Chinese sources dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries tell us of Sky-Turks, who stand up on a rotating ball with one foot, while opening their arms for balance and turning fast with their other feet.
“The above mentioned dance is known to be initiated at around AD years from depictions on the wall of a grave in China, which was the ancient territory of Asian nomads. The dancer in the picture is balancing on a ball with his right foot while rotating with his left foot which is reaching to the back. In front of the dancer a musician plays the drum kneeling down.”
Since Turkish music and folklore history encompasses all Turkic provinces and many branches of culture, it is possible to observe many subjects interwoven with each other. The way curing shamans of Central Asia (the Baksy and the Kham) take on many functions is a good example to this subject. The curer is seen as an artisan with his music, rhythm and dances; but he is also a medium due to his usage of intuitive knowledge within trance. As he answers the questions and needs of the society, he also takes on the role of a sociologist , a pedagogue and psychologist . When you look from the aspect of the depth of knowledge reached through intuitive trance, he becomes a doctor, because he is then capable of directing people’s feelings and due to his ability to answer spiritual needs, he can also be seen as a spiritualist. A good example to this is Dede Korkut (Korkut Ata). Dede Korkut on one side gives advise, on the other he narrates an epic, plays the Kopuz (Turkish lute), cures the ill and prays to obtain beneficial results in various subjects. As can be seen from these examples, curing with music and dance in ancient Turks is not a simple matter of doctoring, but is a social, cultural and spiritual phenomenon. To clarify the subject further, the following examples can be given: “11th century historian Gardizi gives the following information about the Kyrgyzian people: among the Kyrgyz there is a person called Faginum (Kam). He comes at a certain time every year and brings musicians with various instruments. The musicians start playing and the Kam faints and falls down. After this he starts telling what will happen that year: famine, abundance, rain, draught, danger, enemy attacks, security….The Kham tells all sorts of things and mostly, what he says becomes reality.”
In shamanism, the shaman and the doctor are considered the same person.
“The general shamanistic concept of gods and sprits could be derived from the descriptions in hymns and prayers that were sang in rituals. But these hymns and prayers have been lost in time. The Kham could not repeat his words after the ritual, because the Kham repeats his prayers impromptu during the trance and then forgets them.”
Yusuf Hacip of Balasagun in his work ‘the Kutadgu Bilik’ (Knowledge of Happiness) considers Khams at the same level as herbal curers (doctors); and notes the Khams as beneficial personalities in society.
“Kerek tut Otaci, kerek kam
Olugligke her giz asig kilmaz em.“
“Call the doctor, the curer or the Kam
Medicine can’t help the one whose time has come.”
In another place in the same book he says the following:
“Kamug igke ot ol emi belguluk
Ol ig emleguci kam belguluk.“
(Every illness or problem has a medicine and a Kham to cure it.)
A learned man called Odgurmish who represents contentment says the following while giving advise to the Hakan; which is very interesting: “Some people are poor, and some are frustrated with trepidation. You posses the cure for their predicament. Cure them! Became their Kham!.”

Names of the prophet, of angels, of saints and sheiks start entering the prayers of the Khams under the influence of Islam. The Turks of East Turkestan call the male shaman ‘oyun’, just like the Yakuts. The Kyrgyz and the Kazakh call the person who replaces or imitates the same function as the shaman ‘the Baksy’ or ‘the Bahshi’.
These Asiatic Turkish curers called the Kam or the Baksi, gave a special importance to the musical instruments which they used during the rituals and consider them sacred. Among these, an instrument called ‘the kopuz’ which could be played with the finger, the mouth or with a bow, had spiritual and therapeutical connections. Simetay, a kopuz player who we met in the city Almati in Kazakhstan passed on the following relatively important information to us: “Kopuz is the instrument of Dede Korkut and it is played with a bow. One of the screws which the string of the instrument is tied to, represents the sun: the other the moon. In the body of the instrument, the bottom of the bridge where the strings are tied, represents the earth and above it represents the sky. Sound comes out between these two elements by the friction of the bow; this sound helps the connection of the Kam, with the spirit of the ancestor.”
Hakas; the ancient territory of the Kyrgyz Turks, starts around the river Kem and reaches beginnings of the famous river of Yenisey. The Yenisey part of the Gokturk inscriptions are found here. The oldest description of Kopuz or the most ancient Turkish musical instruments are documented here. Vertkoy describes this Hakas komus or kopuz as follows: “Komus is a 2 or 3 string instrument. The instrument called the Topshur of the Altai region and the Topshulur of the Tuva area, have the same origin with this instrument. The body and the neck of the instrument is carved out from the same tree stump. The bottom is covered with sheep or deer antlers. The strings are made from horse tail or sheep intestine. One of the strings is white, the other is black. It is 70 or 80 cm long.”
The following descriptions of the author are also very important: “This musical instrument is first covered with skin, and then it is riveted with deer antlers; a hoarse and groaning magical sound resonates from the instrument to the surroundings… Music was not just a companion for enjoyment, happiness, love, sadness and entertainment. It was a sound and a rhythm which united the state with the nation, which gave the army feeling of cause at war, and also directed its pace and movement. Music with kopuz or saz was a curing, encouraging, relaxing and unifying social phenomena.”
1- As seen in Dede Korkut stories, it was the symbol of spiritual masters and sublime states.
2- It was a symbol which narrated the adventures of the warriors.
3- It was a sound to demand help from and negotiate with divine entities.
4- It was a divine sound, which gave power to the warriors who were praised by the kopuz and helped them overcome bulls and other mythical creatures.
5- The divine sound which alerts the community and gives them news is also the sound of the kopuz. In Dede Korkut stories, when Beyrek returns to his home, he exchanges his horse with a kopuz…
6- The divine sound which repels evil spirits and ushers in the good ones is also the sound of the kopuz.
“…half muslim, kopuz players named the Bahshi, used the kopuz in various ceremonies like the casting of spells, fortune telling, calling benign spirits, driving away evil spirits and curing.”
The below information from Radlof quoted from Prof. Dr. Bahaeddin Ogel gives us much clearer descriptions about the kopuz: “…The Baksi, is an example that comes to our day from the age of the ancient shamans. They were called to cure illnesses. Instead of the shaman’s drum, the Baksi had a two stringed fiddle. The rims of the instrument is covered with rings and metallic pieces which makes sound. They call this kobus. They also carried a wand. At the head piece of the wand which was like a stick, there was a rattle and metallic pieces.”
According to the belief of the Kazakh and the Kyrgyz, Korkut Ata is one of the greatest spiritual masters. The person who invented the Kazakh kopuz and tombure; dombra instruments was again Korkut Ata.
After we describe from various sources the areas, and among the areas usage of music in curing in ancient Turks, we can focus on the tonal structure of Turkish music. Musicologists like Mahmud Ragip Kosemihal and Ahmet Adnan Saygun construct this tonal structure on pentatonism. Against the scale where seven sounds – with the eighth sound giving the octave – there are six sounds with the octave in the pentatonic scale. Just like the major and the minor scale which had been formulized and shown in a systematic way in the western world, there has been different pentatonic scales registered in various parts of the world.

There are very many pentatonic melodies in Japanese music. Japanese musicologists call these pentatonic series ‘minyo’, ‘gagakulitsu’, ‘riyuku’ or ‘miyakobushi’.
Melodic lyrics sang by Kazakh Turks during curing sessions, accompanied with dombra and kilkopuz instruments, and songs and prayers chanted by Ural curers (whose examples can still be found today), with dombra, korai and jaws harp within Kazan Turkish tradition, all show pentatonic features.
In Turkic communities like the Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Altay, Ural, Tuva, Hakas, Saha, Karachay, Chuvash, etc…, there are very many pentatonic songs, prayers, melodies, keus (kuy: instrumental piece expressing feelings about a subject); for example ‘the gait of the coy lady’.
With the knowledge that pentatonic music is an elementary factor in curing among ancient Turks, it is advisable to investigate tonal features of this music.
“Pentatonic music had its roots in the pre-historic ages and is a product of Asia. According to German musicologist Kurt Sachs, since pentatonism can be found in the north; in Scotland and among Lapons, and also in the south; in Hungary; in Gregua province, in the songs of the ancients, and in Spain, it must be older than the minor and the major scale.”
“The fact is that there is a pentatonic base to the musical structure; this is the oldest and the most Asiatic essence. Therefore we must study further and find a) melodies which are originally heptatonic but have been simplified to suit the pentatonic base, b) melodies which are in essence pentatonic but appear to be heptatonic (although preserving the pentatonic base of the structure) due to ornamental notes, transitory notes and appoggiatura notes. Examples found in such studies, will widen the base of the real pentatonic (pentatonic unhemitonic) types.”
“…Let’s suffice by reading two original research papers by world famous Bela Bartok: Archaic paint and the parlando-rubato rhythm of Hungarian melodies, makes us believe the possibility that, these melodies are in fact the residue of a musical culture which has remained secret within the peasant class . The ancient feature is seen within the following strong sound series: Sol, Si bemol, Do, Re, Fa, Sol… These pentanonic series systems gives us the impression that we are face to face with an ancient music culture that the Hungarians brought from Asia: A music which is likely to be in direct relation with the music of the Cheremish, the Tartars and the Kyrgyz…”
French author M.H.Prunieres, musicologist Dr.R.Lachmann, Prof.Hornbestel, M.Alexis Chottin have all investigated the music of the Tuareg and the Berberi Tribes of Africa, and they observed clear examples of pentatonics of Turkestan and thus have drawn attention to the relations between Central Asia and Africa.
In November 1979, I visited the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Institute. World famous violin virtuoso Y.Menuhin was the Director of the Institute. I met with the Vice President Juliette Alvin and we watched the music therapy sessions for autistic children. In these sessions music therapy was conducted with piano and rhythm instruments. J.Alvin disclosed to me that, the implementation of pentatonic music gave the children determination and self confidence and autism was cured by these feelings. My personal observations also verified this theory.
In many countries of Europe, there are schools called ‘WALDORFSCHULE’ which continue the education of Rudolf Steiner; who is the founder of the science of Antroposophy. In these schools, which give a special emphasis to education with art, music is seen as the most important aspect of education, and pentatonic music is taught with specially made harps and flutes. Behind the easiness of improvisation and intuition connection in modern jazz music, lay the usage of pentatonic scales. World famous American virtuoso, pianist Keith Jarret owes his fame to pentatonic scales he uses in jazz.
In many areas in the world (Central Asia, Ural, Bashkurtistan, Kyrgyzistan, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Tuva, Hakas, Saha, Altai, Anatolia, Chuvash, China, Japan, Endonesia, Indýa, Africa, Scotland, North, South and Central America and Eskimo territory) pentatonic music is used for various means. Among these means; trance and curing show a specialty and are considered important. It is known that from a suitable concentration position pentatonic melodies are formed through inner feelings, and these reached the level of consciousness where through improvisation, attain productive variations which may be called infinite. The Baksi and the Kam of the Central Asia, attain trance levels in rituals which sometimes last for days through the improvisation of pentatonic melodies. Here I would like to narrate a written document as it is: “Malaria and Shamanism: Here I had a terrible malaria. I had this since we were in Bokhara. One of the governmental officers; Abdulhamit Arifov, had brought me some quinine. But this medicine affected my ears in a negative way. One day they told me that in a near-by village called Aq-car there was a very experienced Baksi – Shaman; and I should go there for curing. I accepted willy-nilly. They sent a message to the Baksi and we vent to his village. These people belonged to the Karlik clan; the Baksi was going to prepare himself for one day. On the evening of the second day we were on our way. Inside an Uzbek tent, there was a great fire. The black bearded, strong featured Baksi – who looked in his forties – drank tea and spoke with other people as an ordinary person would. Then he made a circle with his friends. He started playing a drum which was called a dungur and began singing shamanic songs. He began whirling. Other people were also turning round and round. This ceremony lasted a long time. The Baksi came to me and said: “You don’t believe in us, the spirits are not coming; lets call the whole thing off.” I told him not to cancel the ritual and assured him that I believed. Again they turned for a while, and played and sang. At last one of them reached trance. Foam came through his mouth and he lost consciousness. They laid him down at the site. A few more people also reached trance and then eventually the Baksi himself reached trance state. There was a shovel there which was kept ready. They had put it inside the fire. The Baksi lifted the shovel with a twig. The twig began to burn. He took water to his mouth and sprayed it on the shovel. The water drops that were spurting out of the fire were coming to my face and were scorching me. They told me not to fear and that this was beneficial for me. Eventually the Baksi took the iron shovel which had been burning in the fire, into his mouth with his teeth. He walked around me a few times in this state, and then threw the shovel back into the fire. While this was going on, many questions were being asked to the Baksi. He told me that I would be fine. They asked him whether Emir would be successful or not. Eventually the Baksi reached normal consciousness, and told me not to take any medicine and that I would be fine soon.
His mustache had not burned although he had taken the burning shovel into his mouth. I knew that the fire was not a fake one, due to the hot water drops that came spurting on my face. This way I had attended a true Shaman’s ritual for the first time in my life but when I look back, I can also remember that when I was a child, a Baksi called a ‘Bagucu’ had cured a similar illness I had had. From this day on, I didn’t use quinine and I didn’t feel the malaria either. This man was not a charlatan and was considered a true Baksi around the region. He didn’t accept any gifts or any money. The Uzbeks in the area became more sincere towards me, due to my attendance in the shamanic rituals. Uzbeks around this region respect me a great deal and call me ‘Mollah’. One day Cebbar Bek invited my to meet around forty people of Uzbeki notables. These were not the supporters of Emir. We had nice conversations with these people. Thus I stayed with Cebbar for over a month.”
The following can be said about the pentatonic nature of the melodic structure which is the basic material of Turkish music therapy tradition: “The oldness of pentatonism: Both the Greek notes on Phrygian pentatonics, and the same basic structure of pentatonism seen in the melodies, which the Magyars brought from Asia, are first evidences of Asiatic oldness of pentatonism. But, in my next book, when we see the gross presence of pentatonism in the songs of Polish, Scandinavian, Scottish, Irish and Berberi tribes, apart from its ‘oldness’ we will have to focus on its relation with ancient migrations Thus we reach the conclusion that the oldest tonal types of Turkish folk music is pentatonic. To comparatively express the various forms of this music is something that the Turkish musicologist must accomplish.”
The curing sessions of the ancient Baksi, which interwoven with the unison of trance, dance, kopuz, dombra and drums can still be found today in Kazakhstan, Altai, Saha, Kyrgyz, Tuva and Ural regions. The ancient Baksi dance called ‘the Karacorga’, is taught and also used for the curing of patient groups as a part of daily activity of 6 schools (Rosenau, Zurich, Berlin, Mannheim, Madrid, Barcelona) and 11 centers (Madrid, Barcelona, Zurich, Vienna, Rosenau, Berlin, Mannheim, Freiburg, Almati, Bishkek, Istanbul) which have been founded around the world. Among, Hochschule fur Music (Munchen), Rosenau Music Therapy Institute and University of Marmara, there is a joint effort to teach music, dance and therapy tradition of ancient Turks.
The world famous heart surgeon Prof. Dr. Mehmet Oz, in the pages of his book, in which he wrote about our activities, states that, there is a vast number of death incidents due to fear in heart operations, and by using music therapy CDs during operations, which are prepared by our group and which comprise the melodic examples of music therapy applications of ancient Turks, there has been decrease in death incidents and the increase in the success rate of operations.
One of the examples which still alive today among Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Altai Turks, is a movement therapy method which is known as ‘Karacorga’ or ‘Baksi Curing Session’. The Baksi (the Seer, the Looker) is a chosen person of the ancestral spirit and is a highly regarded man, due to his accurate applications during therapy sessions. First, the Baksi through prayer, takes refuge in the ancestral spirit (Ata ruhu). After the contact, he slowly rises; by spiral hand-arm movements he concentrates on the spiritual energy and tries to attain this force in his arms. Meanwhile, other musicians join him with water sound and instruments like Shangobuz, Kilkopuz and Dombra. In the second stage, energy is directed to the shoulders and with shoulder movements rhythm and melody changes. The last stop in the physical body is the head. When head movements begin, musicians change the rhythm and the melody appropriately. The stage after this is most important. The Baksi with the aid of free rhythm and melody, steer towards intuition and with improvised dances he reaches sublime states like trance. During trance, he
perceives and applies the knowledge related to the curing process through intuition. This stage is better described as a stage where unity with the unchangeable knowledge and infinitude with immortality is attained. Then, with consecutive head, shoulder and arm movements return begins and ground connection is made. Eventually by sitting down the session ends. Baksi decides the duration of the session.
We will now focus on an active music therapy session which was developed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Rahmi Oruc Guvenc and Theo. Psychologist Gerhard Kadir Tucek (Headmaster of Austria, Oriental Music Therapy School) and was applied in many European hospitals and therapy centers: In this application the basic theme is to stimulate forgotten feelings, and by producing new feelings, change the mood of the person and help adaptation to healthy living conditions. To attain this aim, the therapy session can be described as an activity to reach, by suitable movements, coherence and equilibrium, which is found continuously and in an unaltered way in nature. The session is applied in liaison with pentatonic, half pentatonic and authentic Turkish music repertory and execution of authentic musical instruments. In autistic, neurotic, passive, fearful, timid, distressful and spastic patients, observation of change of emotions and through exercise, the development the ability of movement can be attained through these sessions.
APPLICATION OF THE SESSION
1- First special movements to get to know hands better and to create a balance between the heart, the eyes and he hands, (Most of the neurons in the brain are reserved for the tongue and the hands.)
2- This movement is a circular motion from the outside towards the inside performed by the arms. Its expression is a relief from external effects and stimulants and diversion to our inner self, and real values that have been bestowed upon us. An internal concentration to attain the feelings of health, unity and integrity.
3- This is a movement where the arms draw large arcs parallel to the ground from the outside to the inside. It is a resonance application with natural movements like to fly, to run, to swim, to arrive, to accumulate distance and to unite.
4- This movement activates the back, chest and shoulder muscles and bones which are known to be physical energy blockage centers. Basically, the hands are held stable at the waist, and both shoulders are moved to the back and to the front; and to the right and to the left. (ex. The Baksi dance.)
5- Hands are at the waist and the head is moved to the front and the back, and to the sides. This is described as an exercise which develops and clears the inner areas of nerves and veins which go to the brain, and nape and neck muscles. (ex. Baksi dance.)
6- These movements are the execution of movements learned during the session in an intuitive way, through inner feelings without any exertion, and by taking into considerence the coherence and the equilibrium of in natural movements. After the session, we stand up and all the body moves. The movements are gradually slowed down and the session ends.
Apart from dance, music and healing acquired with the help of these disciplines, which have an important place in Turkish history and culture, and the Baksi-Kam curing traditions and pentatonic music forms, the method of curing with tonality music (Makam Muzigi) which has grown and established itself, has regained popularity in today’s alternative medicine. In an age older than a millennium, in Central Asia, Transoxiana (Horasan) and Uigur regions, Farabi, Ibn-i Sina (Avicenna), Ebu Bekir Razi, Hasan Shuri, Hekimbashi Gevrekzade Hafiz Hasan Efendi and Hashim Bey had written works on the tonality music, which was spreading and developing in the aforementioned areas. They had charted the relations of tonalities with the emotions and organs of the body. While pentatonic music was developing in Turkic provinces, the tonality system which consisted of seven notes, where one whole note was divided into seven parts, had made a great contribution to our culture with the introduction of over 400 different tonalities.
PASSIVE (RECEPTIVE) THERAPY
Ebu Bekir Razi, one of the great Muslim Turkish scholars, who lived between 834-932, in his work on the curing of melancholic patients tells us the following: “… melancholic patient must be cured through some sort of pre-occupation… melancholic patient should pursue a joyful hobby like hunting or fishing. He should get to know different kind of games. He should meet people whose character, behavior and morals he likes; and should listen to songs which are sang by beautiful voices.”
Great Turkish scholar Farabi (870-950) classifies the effects of the tonalities to the soul as follows:
1- Rast tonality: Induces joy and feelings of peace
2- Rehavi tonality: Induces feelings of infinitude
3- Kuchek tonality: Induces feelings of sorrow and grief
4- Buzurk tonality: Induces fear
5- Isfahan tonality: Induces feelings of self confidence and aids the ability to move
6- Neva tonality: Gives a person taste and relief
7- Ussak tonality: Induces laughter
8- Zirgule tonality: Induces sleep
9- Saba tonality: Gives a person courage and power
10- Buselik tonality: Gives strength
11- Huseyni tonality: Induces feelings of peace (calmness and comfort)
12- Hicaz tonality: Induces humbleness
Great Muslim Turkish philosopher and scholar Ibn-I Sina (Avicenna, 980-1037)
defines the role music plays in medicine as follows: “… One of the most effective and best paths of curing is to increase the mental and spiritual strengths of the patient. To cope better with the illness, the patient should be encouraged, should listen to good music and should come together with people whom he loves.”
Ibn-i Sina states that, he had benefited greatly from the works of Farabi, and adds that he had learned music from him and applied it in his medicinal occupation. In his book ‘Kitap’un Necat’ and ‘Kitab’un Sife’ which he wrote in Arabic, 12. chapters are totally reserved for music. These chapters were translated by Baron Rodolph Dearlangar, and were named and published as ‘La Musique Arap’.
In the works named ‘Tadil-i Emzice’ of the ancient Turkish Doctor Shuuri, there is encompassing information about curing with music. Shuuri in his work ‘Tadil-I Emzice’ states that at the different times of the day, different tonalities are effective. According to him:
1- Rast and Rehavi tonality: Effective at dawn
2- Huseyni tonality: Effective in the morning
3- Irak tonality: Effective around mid-morning
4- Nihavend tonality: Effective around noon
5- Hicaz tonality: Effective between two prayer times
6- Buselik tonality: Effective in the afternoon
7- Ussak tonality: Effective at dusk
8- Zengule tonality: Effective after sunset
9- Muhalif tonalities: Effective after the last prayer in the evening
10- Rast tonality: Effective at midnight
11- Zirefkend tonality: Effective after midnight
According to Shuuri, different tonalities affect the different gatherings of people:
1- Gathering of religious scholars (Ulema meclisi): Rast and Tevabii tonalities
2- Assembly of Kings: Isfahan and Tevabii tonalities
3- Gathering of Dervishes: Hicaz and Tevabii tonalities
4- Gathering of Sufis: Rehavi and Tevabii tonalities
Nine centuries before our time in the Nureddin Hospital in Damascus, which was built by Seljukian Sultan Nureddin Zengi, musical tonalities were used to cure patients.
In later times, curing with music was implemented in Amasya, Sivas, Kayseri, Manisa, Bursa, Istanbul (Fatih Kulliyesi) and Edirne hospitals. We find the following written in Evliya Chelebi’s travel chronicles: “The late Bajezid, the benefactor; may God forgive his sins; to cure the ill, to relieve the aggrieved, to get rid of the passion of love and as a nutrition to the souls of the crazy, had arranged 10 professional singers and 10 musicians, of which 3 were only singers, 1 was a Neyzen, 1 was a violin player, 1 was a musikar (Pan flute) player, 1 was a Santur player, and 1 was an Ud player. They came 3 times a week to apply a session of music to the patients and the mad.”
According to these sources, during the execution of these passive-receptive music therapy sessions, which developed with the ripened tonalities of Turkish Art Music – which has its origin in Horasan (Transoxiana) – and Horasan Anatolian music, the patients would listen either by sitting comfortably or lying down in a resting position. In this form of curing, the aim was to relieve the patient by changing their emotional states and help them rekindle their self confidence
Today, in the technique applied by our therapists, these basic principles have been preserved. The patient lies in a comfortable position and with an accompanying relaxing rhythm and water sound; Ney, Rebab, Cheng, Ud, Dombra and Rubab are played in an improvised fashion and suitable tonalities are used. In these sessions, many positive changes and improvements have been recorded in psychological and physical illnesses ranging from autism and pediatrics to geriatrics. Dr. L. Gutjahr and Prof. V. Mechleid have recorded EEG measurements which have corroborated these traditions of at least a millennium. After experimenting on the important 10 to 15 of these 400 tonalities, we have made cassettes and CDs to be used in the sessions.
In Vienna, at the Meidling Rehabilitation Center, therapy implementations are executed by using Turkish tonalities on coma patients. Here a change in the alpha and theta waves in the brain of the patients was observed. Many patients are relieved of coma after these therapy sessions.
