Tire Construction
Tires provide the only connection between the vehicle and the road surface. For that reason, they are obviously very important. You may not plan to become a tire and wheel specialist. However, you need to understand basic tire design, tire diagnosis, and the handling of tires.
Tires serve several functions:
• Tires provide the traction required to negotiate the terrain. Tires are specially designed for use on different surfaces. These surfaces may be dry paved roads, wet roads, gravel roads, and roads covered with snow or ice.
• Tires act as part of the suspension. The air-cushioned support is part of the shock-absorbing action needed to reduce shock and vibration from the body and frame.
• The tire's construction, size, inflation pressure, and tread design enable proper handling during straight-line driving and proper operation during turns and braking.
