Short for fear of missing out, FOMO can be used in everyday life. It refers to the sense of urgency to buy when everyone else is talking about it.
Shill
Shilling refers to the promotion of a cryptocurrency for the person’s own personal benefit.
These people are likely those that have invested in a particular cryptocurrency that isn’t performing as well as they hoped and are trying to persuade other people to buy it so that the price would go up. Essentially, it’s all for personal gain.
FUD
Short for fear, uncertainty, and doubt, FUD refers to when people spread negative feelings about Bitcoin.
HODL
HODL is probably the most popular slang in Bitcoin. It refers to holding on to your BTC, despite volatility in price. It originated from a typo, where the user intended to type “hold” and misspelled it—probably out of pure excitement.
Going to the moon
Going to the moon refers to the belief that the price of Bitcoin will experience a significant spike in the future.
If you say that Bitcoin is going to the moon, it means that you believe your investment is going to pay off very well in the future.
Whale
A whale is someone who owns a significant amount of a cryptocurrency.
Pump and dump
The term pump and dump refers to a tactic used by a group of cryptocurrency users to manipulate the sentiments of the market.
To pump means to hype a cryptocurrency based on fake or misleading information and when the prices go up due to increased investor sentiment, the group will dump all their coins by selling them—which will, in turn, cause the price to drop again.
Sats
Short for satoshis, sats are the smallest unit of Bitcoin. One sat is equal to 0.00000001 BTC.
ICO
An initial coin offering or ICO is the cryptocurrency equivalent to an initial public offering (IPO) which means raising funds through the sale of securities or shares for the first time to the public.
Basically, it refers to a crypto company’s fundraising project. They’ll lay out what it’s all about, the team behind it, and ask for investments. As a reward, they’ll offer new tokens.
KYC
Short for know your customer or know your client, KYC refers to the verification of a user’s identity. Most cryptocurrency exchanges will implement this sort of rule not only to verify a trader’s identity but also to comply with regulations and keep their marketplaces safe.
NFTs
Non-fungible tokens or NFTs are unique cryptographic assets that have special identification codes. They come in many shapes and sizes—Tweets, digital artwork, audio, and more.
Diamond hands/paper hands
Similar to HODL, diamond hands refer to holding Bitcoin even when there’s a ton of pressure to sell.
Paper hands refer to investors that sell off their investments too early—mostly because they’re afraid of the risk and are susceptible to panic.
Bullish/bearish
Bullish and bearish both represent a pattern in the market. Although they were mainly applied to traditional stock markets at first, they’ve found their way to the cryptocurrency space.
A bullish market will feature upward trends in price, while a bearish market will present downward trends.
Buy the dip (BTD)
Buying the dip or BTD means purchasing an asset after its price has dropped. The belief behind it is the same as when you convince yourself to buy something on sale at the mall.
Buying the dip represents buying Bitcoin at lower prices, hoping that it will rise again in the future.

Creating an account
The first stop on your Paxful journey is to create an account. Open your web browser, head to the Homepage, and click on the Register button at the top right corner of the page.
As soon as your account is created, you’ll receive your free Paxful Wallet. Be sure to also verify your phone number and ID to trade with higher limits and unlock even more benefits.
Buying your first Bitcoin
Now that you’ve got all the tools you need to get started, are you ready to buy your first Bitcoin? The best thing about buying Bitcoin on Paxful is that you have over 350 ways to pay, zero fees are charged to the buyer, and you can start with as little as 10 USD.
Here’s how to get started:
1. Head to the home page
Select Bitcoin as the cryptocurrency you want to buy, choose from the 350+ payment methods available, and, optionally, input how much you want to spend. From there, click Find Offers.
2. Choose an offer
As soon as you’re taken to the offers page, it’s time to find an offer that suits your needs.
Here are a few things you should be on the lookout for:
Price – Shown as a percentage with an arrow either pointing up or down beside it, this is how much you’re buying the Bitcoin compared to the current market price. Additionally, you can also see how much Bitcoin you’re getting on the dollar by looking at the USD value beside the price.
Offer description – Shown under the payment method, the offer description gives you a brief idea of how these sellers want to be paid. Make sure that your preferred payment method matches theirs so that the trade goes smoothly.
Feedback score – Shown as a green thumbs up icon and a numerical rating, the feedback score of each trader gives you a brief idea of how reputable they are.
Seller availability – Before ever starting a trade, make sure that the seller is available. If they’re inactive, it may take a while for the trade to be completed. You can check this by seeing how recently they were online.
Badges – We’ll be pinning offers from some of our most trusted traders at the top, so be on the lookout for a Featured or Trusted badge on their offers. Additionally, you can filter the offer page to show only trusted traders by turning Paxful Verified Offers Only on.
3. Start a trade
As soon as you find an offer you like, click on the Buy button to get a full overview of the offer. If everything looks good on your end, you can enter the amount you want to pay and click Buy now.
When the trade starts, politely greet your trade partner and they should send you a specific set of instructions to follow. Make sure to follow them carefully so that the trade goes as smoothly as possible.
After sending in your payment, remember to mark your trade as Paid. This will shift control over to the seller, so give them a few minutes to confirm your payment. As soon as it’s confirmed, they’ll release the Bitcoin from escrow into your Paxful Wallet.
From there, the trade is complete and all that’s left to do is to leave feedback for your trade partner!
Staying safe while buying Bitcoin
We do everything we can to make sure that you’re in a safe trading environment, enabling security features like escrow services, state-of-the-art blockchain analysis tools, and more. However, you can also do your part in making sure that your money is safe on Paxful.
Never trade off-escrow
Trading off-escrow is against Paxful’s Terms of Service and takes away the protection that Paxful moderators assure you. If you ever encounter someone who tries to take the trade off-escrow, report them immediately.
Never share any personal information
Giving away your contact or personal information can lead to people attempting to scam you outside of the Paxful website or impersonating you to get access to your accounts.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
Enabling 2FA for all the functions on your account adds an extra layer of protection. This means that you’ll need to sign off on any transactions that go through. Be sure to turn this feature on as soon as you can.
Set security questions
As soon as you create your account, you should immediately set up security questions. If you haven’t yet, you can always go back into your account settings and set them up. Remember to choose questions and answers that only you know and be sure that you can easily remember them!
Look for trusted traders
If you’re just starting out, one of the best ways to get the hang of things is to specifically look for trusted traders on the platform. As we mentioned earlier, you can do this by turning on the Paxful Verified Offers Only toggle when you’re looking for an offer.
