The purpose of the law is to regulate or monitor the relationships between individuals and to compensate the victim for any harm suffered.
The remedies for the civil law are typically damages, injunction or order to stop and order to perform a task. Legal liability arises from 2 general classes of legal wrongs (besides criminal act):
Torts: legal or civil wrongs committed against people or organizations, causing them a loss.
Torts result because the tort feasor, who is the one who commits the tort, is either negligent in his duties that are imposed by law and not contract, causing someone else a loss, or causes a loss through his actions (e.g. causing a car accident, or failure to make a safe product).
Breach of contract: lack of performance by one party toward another to satisfy a contract that the parties agreed to.
