What causes ulcers?
Helicobacter pylori is the most common cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers. This bacteria affects the mucus that protects the stomach and small intestine, allowing stomach acid to damage the lining. It is estimated that 30% to 40% of Americans are infected with H. pylori. It is currently unclear how this bacteria spread, but researchers believe it is primarily transmitted through unsanitary food, water, and utensils. People carrying H. pylori can also spread it through direct contact with saliva. |
