Switzerland is a small country in the heart of Europe. At the same time, Switzerland is big with regard to the diversity of its culture and scenery. French "savoir vivre" typifies the west; Mediterranean influences lend the south its Italian-style charm; and a Germanic legacy reigns to the north. The centre of the country and the greater part of its surface area are dominated by mountains. The main range of the Alps forms a majestic barrier across the entire land, yet this natural boundary between north and south does not correspond to the political borders. For centuries, in fact, Switzerland has controlled areas to both the north and south of the Alps and added them to its national territory. In former times, Switzerland¡¯s independence and modest wealth were secured thanks to transit traffic between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
