Hi there,
I majored in Italian at university and gained a grad dip. in translation (Italian to English). Although I'm passionate about the language, I let myself get sidetracked (!) into a human resources job. Now, I'm really keen to get back to my passion and start my freelance translation career. I'm based in New Zealand at the moment (with a prolonged visit to Europe on the cards) and the market here is very small. I have very little idea what I could expect to charge per hour/page/w... I have very little idea what I could expect to charge per hour/page/word/document as a beginner freelancer. I know that agencies and the government charge, on average, $40 - $80 NZ per document/page. I was wondering what sorts of rates are charged in Europe/UK/US and I was also wondering if I could charge in Euros/USD/Pounds etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Natalie,
I suggest you convert rates and keep a table of NZ dollar/US dollar/euro/UK £ equivalents.
I also suggest you give the terms "page" and/or document a wide berth.
You should charge ideally by word, or by number of keystrokes (in a line or in a page). If you charge someone X dollars a page and the page length changes each time, you are going to be out of pocket very quickly indeed!

European customers work by the word and by the line (which is on keystroke count too, either 55 or 60).
Oh, and don't forget to state if you are charging by source or by target. The source is best.
This all sounds very confusing, I know, so prepare a table of equivalents for your quoting too.

You weren't to know that in the past rates discussions have become so heated that we've had to ask people to avoid getting into detail (in other words cents/word) because of the controversy that arises. Also becasue rates vary extensively, depending on experience, languages and specialisations.
