It did help me get a few clients... May 9, 2017

I was an Associate Member for several years (till this year) and got a few (good) clients who had "found" me on the ATA website.

Helps get more clients May 9, 2017

In the sense that when new clients see that I have it they may sometimes be more likely to pick me over someone who doesn't.

Other - I don't know May 9, 2017

I missed the choice: "I don't know". As I am not ATA-certified I have no idea if it could help or not. I am a certified translator for translations from English, Russian and Spanish into German and vice versa for German courts and boards, but have not used this too often during the last years.
I was a member of the German translator association BDÜ, but didn't feel that it helped me in any way, so I quit about 12 years ago.

Is cheaper than May 9, 2017

... joining the UK one I checked out several years ago (ITI?) when I was still interested in this kind of thing. It was horrendously expensive and demanding. Too many hoops.

It depends on the translator. I am myself not an ATA-certified translator.

Don't know May 9, 2017

Since I'm Spanish and not American, I can't know if it helps. But I'm not a member either of ASETRAD (Asociación Española de Traductores, Correctores e Intérpretes)- although I'm a Sworn translator after passing an official exam in Spain.

Or can foreigners take the exam too?

I wonder if it depends on your sector May 9, 2017

I suspect it makes a difference whether you translate legal, technical, financial, literary ... but I have no data to prove it, it's just a hunch.

Had the question been about the ATIO or "the organization of your country" it might have been better for answering in an international forum

Good to know May 10, 2017

I love to learn that I'm not alone in a boat. Every time I answer a poll and I think I'll be with the minority, then I find the vast majority is with me, it feels good.

I have never realized what would be the real benefits of ATA or any other association. I vehemently refuse to join any association or labor union, and nobody was ever able to convince me otherwise. I have never realized what would be the real benefits of ATA or any other association. I vehemently refuse to join any association or labor union, and nobody was ever able to convince me otherwise. I don't like the kind of people who run these entities (at least in my country), as I see them making lots of money for very little benefits in exchange.

And, no it does not help you get better prices. This is an illusion. Perhaps a few clients, but nothing that could possibly make it necessary for any competent professional.
