I play very occasionally (more often than not, I don't have the time nor the disposition to play games) a little word game, which is kind of addictive: Letroca.

The English like to play a thing called Scrabble. It's a very big deal for them. I find it utterly uninteresting. They play these games as a substitute for conversation. I prefer conversation.

I love playing Codeword and Polygon ('The Times') and Polish crosswords, esp. Jolka ('Rozrywka' / 'Entertainment'.) Thanks for asking!

I try to do the New York Times 'Spelling Bee' every day until I make 'Genius'. Also crossword puzzles. I don't particularly like to spend time playing word games played with other people, such as Scrabble.

Scrabble can stimulate conversation... Dec 26, 2021

@Tom.
I partly agree, but not entirely - we have played many good games of Scrabble in my family! (But then I'm English...)
Between people who see each other a lot, conversation can get repetitive. There may be subjects on which they have to agree to differ, which get hard to avoid. A game - any game - provides friendly interaction, maybe non-verbal, or possibly to generate new subjects for conversation.

Between people who see each other a lot, conversation can get repetitive. There may be subjects on which they have to agree to differ, which get hard to avoid. A game - any game - provides friendly interaction, maybe non-verbal, or possibly to generate new subjects for conversation.

Scrabble, where you have to think of words that can be made from a small selection of available letters, can revive associations and topics that go further back or beyond the immediate situation and the current news.

Then, if you are lucky, there is a new topic for conversation - where an unusual word came from, what you could have chosen if you had had one more letter... or, if you dare, alternative spellings, and whether to permit family words that are not generally known. (We usually do - they are fun to talk about afterwards!) They bring back memories of how the words arose. Our multilingual family identifies one uncle as the inventor of the expression ´fuldissimo´ - what you become if you eat too much cake laced with rum! Several children have put their very own words to the way they saw the world. They are not always easy to spell with Scrabble letters, but almost.

Happy New Year, everyone, and stay safe!

Yes, lots Dec 26, 2021

There are lots of games -word roundup, wonderworld and Seven Little Words especially -in the local daily but sometimes you have to guess what the creator of the game had in mind to get the right word but then, when you see the answer, you realize it’s so simple

Game of run-away words Dec 27, 2021

The only "word game" I play, mostly when very tired, is "reading" Algernon Charles Swinburne. In quotation marks because, try as I may, I still cannot understand what I am reading. The words themselves are fine, they just tend to run away from any comprehensible meaning... so it's like chasing little slippery animals through the woods. I can hear them in my mind, though. Such are the limitations of English as a second language.

I used to really love playing scrabble during my junior high-school to high-school years. I even signed up for several scrabble competitions.

Oh, how I missed being young sometimes.
