I heard about proz a couple of years ago from a colleague, and since then have recommended it to several others, some who are just starting up and others that have been in the business for a while.
I would imagine that there are still many people working as translators out there who are unaware of proz, so plumped for up to 50% as a rough estimate...

Why? I learned about ProZ only 1,5 years ago. I do not feel ashamed, because I didn't know some portal in internet. There's probably many more things I didn't find in google yet

I learned about less than a year ago. Since then, I have told my colleages to use it, though, they are not very prone to using this kind of technologies.

I know ProZ is now becoming available in lots of languages but I believe I'm right in thinking that that's a fairly recent development. I was lucky enough to be born English but I don't think we ought to look down on those who translate between other languages and don't speak English or one of the "main" European languages. I voted just 1-10% as a) there are many new translators who haven't found the site, even in France, b) there are many Internet-phobics, even in the most developed countries, c) as stated above there are those who have source and target languages not provided for by ProZ.
Does the asker have any idea of the answer or is this just a guessing game? I'd love to hear from anyone who knows of any statistics on the numbers of translators throughout the world. I presume it would be easy to find the total of "prozzers" (if that's the term!)

I recall a thread last year in which it was confirmed that it is company policy not to reveal that information. Haven't got time to look for it now, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who read it. Could be wrong of course. If so, maybe someone from staff can supply the figure.
So I'm just a little baffled as to why a poll is posted - specifically after having been screened by the site, as I understand polls are, but again I could be wrong - if some of the basic information needed to reach any possible conclusion, i.e. the number of registered Proz users (including members), is confidential and thus unavailable.
Seems a little illogical.
I say a "little" baffled, as I've got far bigger fish to fry today

Actually, most of the translators I know have NEVER heard of proz...
And these are professional translators, all levels of experience, and language pair English-Spanish
I fell into proz just by chance, years ago, looking for dictionaries. Still had the VERY, VERY Old format, and the concept was very different.
And it had this WONDERFUL formula to find online dictionaries containing the word you needed using altavista (a long combination of ANDs, ORs parenth... See more Actually, most of the translators I know have NEVER heard of proz...

I am a little surprised for the results of the poll, which indicate that a very restricted number of translators all around the word effectively know ProZ.com.
In my very limited experience as apprentice translator, the URL was found (together with similar and, suppose, well known translator resources), in just few weeks of navigation in the web.
Presume that most of translators who do not really know it have a very long experience in this field and, probably, do not use at... I would be downright shocked if the actual number was larger than 3% or so; probably even less. Anyone who's voting for the 26-50% and 51-75% brackets is grossly overestimating the importance of a single internet site and underestimating the total number of translators in the world, in my opinion.

And you are naming one of the most widely used language pairs at world level.
Try with Chinese translators, or Arabic, or African, or from Central Asia...
As for me, in my own Spanish-speaking, tiny country with lots of university graduates, perhaps 5% of translators have ever heard of ProZ before I met them...

As a long-time staffer, I can reliably assure you that people in jobs with major organisations (UN, EU...) or international associations, big companies etc. have almost certainly never heard of Proz. I only discovered the site after I had left the translation business. It's simple: when you work for an organisation, you can ask your colleagues for help, contact the end "client" directly or consult company literature. Trawling the web to find an answer to a problem is the very last resort.

Perhaps most people taking part in this survey, are "too much used" to the Internet... and don't talk to "too many traditional translators".
Although I agree with you that 50% would be too much, on the other hand the result of this concrete survey doesn't surprise me at all.
