subtitling Sep 24, 2010

Hi,
I suggest you talk about subtitling as a specialization. As a subtitler I find that many freelancers/agencies reject subtitling jobs since they don't know how to produce subtitles (and then they turn to me... )
This field of translation is rapidly growing as there are more and more web videos in addition to (or sometimes instead of) websites and blogs.

This field of translation is rapidly growing as there are more and more web videos in addition to (or sometimes instead of) websites and blogs.
Unfortunately this field does not receive a proper reference in the various translation portals (yes, including Proz). Sometimes it seems that subtitling is refered to as a marginal field of expertise, but reality shows it is going to be a highly required one.
I'll be happy to hear your say in the matter.
Thanks,
Zehavit Ehre

To me it is an interesting topic, so maybe you are so kind to tell us more about how to get specialized in subtitling, what makes it different from mere translation, is this specialization a permanent process or just something that a translator can learn on a training course. Any clues in this respect are welcomed, so please share what you have to say on this.

Translation in Oil & Gas Sep 30, 2010

Hi,
Not long ago I decided to learn a new field for me, i.e. Oil & Gas. I thought I would be helpful for me to learn because it is difficult to get serious employment in Oil & Gas industry without special knowledge. I tried several times but failed to get employment in this field. But still I am in doubt if it is worth doing. i.e. chosing this industry for specialization in translation. Are there any good examples among colleages? Isn't it a long way, after all?

subtitling Sep 30, 2010

Hi there,

I am also interested in subtitling as an area of specialisation. I sort of stumbled onto and started taken on subtitling projects and plan to explore further in this area. So far, this has been limited to mandarin drama serials but I am in wondering what are the other areas with available work. From my exposure so far to subtitling work, although the language used tends to be rather informal, there are more cultural considerations involved in the translation than usual.

Also, I would like to know if we need any tools or should the client (either agencies or video editing companies) provide the software, for e.g. SPOT?

In my language pair, subtitling is the worst rate, emerging translation job. How will I do?

If you missed any session or discussion panel, or if you experienced audio or video difficulties while attending them, remember you will be able to access all recorded content until December 30th, 2010.

Some sessions are already available in the conference page, http://www.proz.com/translation3/freelance-translators/program , or in the virtual environment, while others will be made available within the next few days.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Lucia
