Since a translator can benefit from Vista's speech recognition feature for free, is buying Dragon Naturally Speaking worth the money?

Specialised software versus one size fits all package Jun 24, 2009

I haven't used Vista's speech recognition software, but I have used that provided with XP and if the former has not been radically overhauled for the Vista release then I suspect your experience with Vista's SRS would be the same as mine with XP - which was frankly pathetic.

I tried to use the XP SRS and gave up after a very short trial period. Whereas I tried an old version of Dragon (V6) and was astounded by how quickly it learned to recognise my voice. I must admit that that version was a pirate copy (call it an extended trial period ) but it proved so useful to me that I was only too glad to pay for the latest version (V.10) when I got my new PC.

In general, I think specialised software wins out over packages that try to do too much. In my experience, I'd certainly say that was the case with Dragon vs Windows' SRS.

Thanks! Jun 24, 2009

Alright, thanks for the input I guess I'll just try Vista's SRS at first and see how efficient it is.

I've used both. Jun 24, 2009

This one is a no-brainer. DNS is miles above the Vista system in terms of ergonomics and work flow. I didn't do an accuracy check per se but I would be surprised if Vista offered any advantage.

I use DNS Ver 10 extensively in my work.

Regards,

Michael
