I am writing something which fobliquely mentions this airline (the airline of Taiwan or Formosa -- not of mainland China!), and am looking for the transliteration (transcription) of its name in Enlgish -- the way it would be written if the English script was used in China. I suspect it is something involving 'Jongguo' and 'Hangkong', but have no real idea ... Any comment and spellings most gratefully received!

"China Airlines"is the official name of this airline when it appears in Latin alphabet. A transsliteration in alphabet is actually not used at all.

What I gave above are written in a way (Romanizing Chinese words) which up to now is the most popular in Taiwan: the Wade-Giles system:
(1) ChungHua (hangkong kongsi) --Chunghua is the full name. What appear in the parentheses mean literally "aviation company." and
(2) An abbreviation. Hua stands for Chunghua which means China. Hang stands for aviation.

This answer wins on giving me both the full name and the nickname used in general parlance (sort of like 'BeeAy' is used for British Airways in Britain, or 'Nikkoo' is used in Japan). One niggling thing remains -- surely the Taiwanese and mainland Chinese carriers are not identically named..? Anyhow, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."

So you can just say Zhonghua Hangkong (China Airlines), still the full name is Zhonghua Hangkong Gongsi

So you can just say Zhonghua Hangkong (China Airlines), still the full name is Zhonghua Hangkong Gongsi
