I answered 2 because I have two university degrees, but I also have a postgraduate diploma which isn't considered a degree ... however, it's a university qualification all the same. I think a number of people probably have non-degree qualifications from university which, technically, they can't include in this poll - I guess a lot depends on your university system. My diploma might actually be considered a third degree had I obtained it in another country ...... I probably sound like a total ner... I think I just felt very safe my with head stuck in the books and living at home with my folks before having to go out and brave the big bad world!!

Many translators seem to be highly intelligent and highly studied people with a pronounced distaste for the "rat race", which makes them prefer working on texts in quiet rooms rather than competing with the race-rats out in the open.

à savoir 2 x les mêmes diplômes mais pour 2 langues différentes. C'était assez rock'n roll à l'époque, car il fallait jongler entre les cours et les partiels qui se chevauchaient. Je serais incapable de le refaire aujourd'hui. La preuve, j'écris en français, car je n'arrive plus à faire aussi bien plusieurs choses en même temps (j'ai une traduction allemand-français urgente sur le feu, passer sans transition à l'anglais me demanderait trop d'effort, désolée).

I even got the university titles (2 degrees and 1 postgraduate diploma) in different countries.

Hi Cathy,
this is probably a purely linguistic issue - I don't think many non-native speakers of English know this difference... I would call a "degree" anything that has been issued by a university in response to a full set of examinations and comes with a pretty official-looking certificate but I am glad to learn.

I also have two BAs(one of them in field the other relates some how) and some diplomas, However I'm really considering learning a third language up to the fluency level. for me studying is an endless goal. After all I guess translation is an endless study.

Hello dear colleagues,
I Know the differece mentioned by Katy, but the poll was edited, I meant how many degrees other than languages?
for example:
Is there any engineer or lawier graduated in languages too?
Not the number of languages you are graduated in.
I am graduated in languages, so I have only 1 degree, even if it includes several languages.

I have the professional equivalent to a BSc in Biomedical Sciences, worked in Biomedical Sciences for the whole of my previous professional career. Now after studying Spanish to Advanced level in Spain 5 years ago, I apply both to my specialty of translating medical, scientific and pharmaceutical texts from Spanish to my native language for English medical scientists to read and understand.
If I had the time I would like to be able to have a qualification in translation as many agencies (p... First of all, the "negative" setting of my posting was for fun, of course. After some years of translating, we all grow more or less towards an uniformely kind of translator, whether our initially base was know-how, experience, craftmanship, multicultural upbringing / marriage / development, education, pure love for language or whatever. Clearly, the translation industry needs all types of translators, although a degree in combination with a lot of other above mentioned factors might be preferrable.
