I'm using OmegaT and a macro to remove tags (tagwipe by Briac Pilpré, Thomas Cordonnier and Kos Ivantsov). It works very well and it has levels of aggressiveness (I figured leve 3 is well balanced, as it leaves tags for "bold" or "italics", while removing all meaningless tags).

This option seems to hide absolutely all tags, but are they still in the document but hidden? Or are they removed? Is there any risk that the created documents wouldn't open? I couldn't find any documentation about this particular option.

Role of Tagwipe Jan 26

Let me answer as one of initial developers of Tagwipe and occasional contributor to OmegaT.

The Tagwipe is designed specially for the DOCX format. This format aims to produce lot of totally useless tags - meaning, removing them changes nothing when you open the document in Microsoft Office after.

The Tagwipe is designed specially for the DOCX format. This format aims to produce lot of totally useless tags - meaning, removing them changes nothing when you open the document in Microsoft Office after.
OmegaT's filters for DOCX aim to display all tags, eventually compressing adjacent tags, but this is much more difficult than for other formats like the one of LibreOffice. The Tagwipe is here to limit this effect without having any consequence on the produced result.
That said, DOCX format is also badly documented (the documentation exists but it is sometimes difficult to read) so this is only theory. We cannot be sure that all removals have no consequence, so it should be useful to open the wiped document before making any conclusion.

The "remove tags" option is a part of OmegaT (while Tagwipe is a script) running with the editor. When activated, all the tags disappear from the editor but at this step, nothing occurs on the document itself.
It works for every format, but warning: depending on the format, it cannot be guaranteed that the output (target) document remains readable, since removed tags are not reintroduced in the target file because OmegaT cannot know where they should be.

To summarize:
- Tagwipe : to be used only with DOCX, to be used before the translation in OmegaT; lower risk to modify the appearance of the final document but it is adviced to test before. Depending on the level, you will see more and more differences in the result document.
- Remove tags: used inside the editor, so during the translation (while TagWipe is supposed to be used before); zero consequence on the source document (contrarily to TagWipe) but high risk to have a non-readable target document.
