Hi
I'm translating subtitles from French to English, just in a Word document. The format of the timings are;
00:00:32,120 --> 00:00:34,360
00:00:34,360 --> 00:00:37,080 etc.
Do I need to convert this (eg replace comma with decimal point), or is this format universal.

One of my clients is asking me to translate the on-screen text that appears in some programs, mainly people's names and roles, and argues that they should not pay me extra for that.

Hi António,
If your client pays you per video minute, then there should be no difference. If per subtitle or word, then they should pay extra, of course. Translating such on-screen text is usually considered a standard part of the workflow. | | |

Are you required to subtitle those captions or provide a separate file/translation for them to be added separately in post-production? In the latter case, it is perfectly normal to charge extra for this work. If you have both subtitles and that kind of captions showing at the same TCs, it is double work. | |

i) This means I do not have to transcribe.
ii) I only receive Machine Translated text
iii) I review and edit to ensure grammar, quality and localisation.
In many instances, I do not even have to timecode.

Hi Idzwan,
I'm afraid there's no good way to easily boost your efficiency while ensuring high quality when it comes to MPTE, at least as of now. It's often as much work as translating from scratch (if not more), but the pay is always smaller — just an excuse LSPs use to squeeze a bit more money into their pockets. I'm afraid I can't give you any MTPE tips, but I'd like to invite you to read the AVTE Machine Translation Manifesto.
